AMHERST — At Wednesday’s meeting the Planning Board is scheduled to discuss a proposed zoning bylaw amendment to encourage housing development downtown using “smart growth” principles.
The board will hear from Karen Sunnarborg of the Citizens’ Housing & Planning Association and architect David Eisen, of Abacus Architects and Planners, who will share their expertise.
A 28-page draft of the proposed zoning amendment, dated April 20, detailing rules and regulations under the state’s Chapter 40R smart growth law, has been published on the town website as part of the packet for Planning Board’s meeting.
The document said the purpose of the bylaw amendment “is to establish a Downtown Amherst Smart Growth Overlay District to encourage smart growth” and “to foster a range of housing opportunities.”
Because Gov. Charlie Baker’s state of emergency bans in-person attendance at public meetings, Amherst Planning Board’s meeting will convene remotely Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.
Amherst Media broadcasts the meetings live, and they are recorded for viewing at a later date. The board’s agenda says the meeting also can be accessed via Zoom.
The board is also scheduled to convene a public hearing involving site plan review to build the Kendrick Park playground at East Pleasant Street.
The public is invited to comment on the agenda items, using the remote access technology.
