Sen. Diegnan pursues board of governors vote for Rutgers student reps - My Central Jersey

State Sen. Patrick Diegnan (D-District 18) has reintroduced legislation that if passed would provide two Rutgers students with votes on the university’s board of governors.

Adding two student voting representatives to the board will strengthen the university, Diegnan said. One student and two faculty representatives currently are non-voting members.

“No one knows better the day-to-day challenges and opportunities of Rutgers better than the students who live it every day,” Diegnan said.

Sen. Linda Greenstein (D-District 14) will be a co-sponsor of the bill, said Joe Cammarano, Diegnan’s chief of staff.

Neeharika Thuravil, a soon-to-graduate astrophysics major from Princeton and three-year president of the RU Progressive social and economic justice group, agreed that students could have a positive impact on the board of governors. Thuravil proposed that a faculty member also should have a vote on the board.

“I think both should be on the board of governors – and I think there should be more than one – just because they provide the real ground perspective as to what is happening with the school,” she said. “Faculty members are able to voice concerns over where our funding should be going because our physics building is breaking down or we don’t have enough supplies for research in social work. Students will provide perspective from the student experience regarding dorms, housing, facilities, anything that they use. If you don’t have the people who are consuming your facilities and taking advantage of your facilities and your supports and your money, and if you don’t have the people who are giving you the money giving you perspective, then how do you expect to allocate it fairly?”

Abhishek Kashalikar, a bio-tech major from Piscataway who is the board of governor's non-voting student representative, said that voting rights for both students and faculty would make the board more transparent.

Their inclusion also would help raise more awareness about the role the board of governors, Kashalikar said.

"It’s very important for the board of governors to get the word out," he said. "We want to make sure whatever is going on isn't going to be a secret, that it can be transparent. We need to have more student and faculty voices. That will help a lot more to make it more transparent."
