The consultant overseeing the search expects a “strong field.”

Anyone interested in being the next superintendent of the Sarasota County School District has until the end of the month to get their application in.

The Florida School Board Association, which is overseeing the search, posted the job opening on April 27, and it will remain open until May 29.

Several applicants have already expressed interest in the position, said Bill Vogel, a consultant with FSBA.

“We have had a number of inquiries, so I am expecting a strong field,” Vogel said Monday.

On Tuesday, Vogel will give the Sarasota School Board an update on the process during its meeting, which will be held virtually due to COVID-19 social distancing measures.

The search for interim superintendent Mitsi Corcoran’s replacement has moved forward despite some objections from board members. Based on the current timeline, the board hopes to appoint a new head of schools by mid-July.

At this point the board is in wait-and-see mode, but board members and the general public will be able to review candidates’ credentials as the applications come in. The FSBA will post applicants’ resumes, cover letters and references on the school district’s superintendent search homepage throughout the month, Vogel said.

As of Monday afternoon, the site had no applications posted, and FSBA staff did not return a call seeking numbers on how many applications had been submitted.

Vogel said he has been talking with staff about contingency plans for conducting superintendent interviews if the Centers for Disease Control’s social distancing COVID-19 recommendations are still in place in late June. He said meeting applicants in person is crucial when hiring a new superintendent, and he is hopeful the board could meet with finalists while maintaining appropriate distance, if necessary.

“I think the face-to-face and personal interaction and discussion is essential in a job like this,” Vogel said.

The School Board will finalize appointees to a Citizens Advisory Committee at the May 19 workshop. Each board member will nominate five residents to review applications and make recommendations to the board.

Executive Director of Human Resources exiting

Roy Sprinkle, the district’s executive director of human resources and labor relations, is stepping down from his position to become an assistant principal overseeing grades two through five at Pine View School.

Sprinkle was the director of Human Resources from 2007 to 2018, and became executive director in 2018. His base salary is $150,888, and as an assistant principal at Pine View he will earn $129,285, according to schools spokeswoman Kelsey Whealy.

Allison Sheppard, the assistant principal at Pine View School, is resigning from her position, according to the personnel report attached to the agenda for the School Board’s meeting on Tuesday.

Pine View Principal Stephen Covert said Sheppard was moving back to Virginia to tend to an ailing family member.

Sprinkle will stay in his position until June 30, overseeing the HR department as the district fills teaching vacancies and staffs up for the 2020-21 school year.

“This is a pretty darn important time, and Roy will be there through the end of the fiscal year,” said board member Jane Goodwin.

Goodwin said the district would be advertising the position shortly.
