DAYTON — With the nationwide blood supply already at a critically low level, area blood banks are making requests for people with Type O blood to donate to prevent further supply issues locally.

A spokesperson for the Dayton Community Blood Center said the supply of O positive and negative are in critically low supply and donors are needed to prevent a “blood supply emergency.”
“After weekend usage the Dayton CBC has a short supply of O positive and only a two-day supply of type O negative. Any surge in emergency usage would have immediate impact on area hospitals,” the spokesperson said in a media release Monday.

Type O blood is considered in constant demand, with around 38 percent of people having O positive and around 7 percent having O negative. O positive can be used in transfusions with any patient with a positive blood type while O negative can be used immediately with any patient in need, regardless of blood type, the spokesperson said.
November is also considered a crucial month to donate, due to many disruptions caused by the upcoming holidays and the continued issues with COVID-19 restrictions and limits on blood drives.
“CBC must prepare for both pandemic-related delays or disruptions in the blood drive schedule and for the seasonal challenges that lie ahead. November begins the holiday season when people have less time to donate and the coming of winter brings the potential for weather disruptions,” the spokesperson said.
“To face these challenges CBC needs new donors, including new platelet and plasma donors, and new blood drive sponsors.”
Donors are encouraged to schedule appointments with the Dayton CBC at donortime.com or by calling 937-461-3220.
Last week, the American Red Cross called the current nationwide blood supply “the lowest the Red Cross has seen this time of year in more than a decade.” In the weeks prior to that warning the Red Cross also declared an emergency request for donors.
Several area blood drives have been scheduled throughout the area and appointments are also available.
