LANSDALE — The race is over, the voters have spoken, and the results have the North Penn School Board race too close to call on Wednesday with more than 20,000 Montgomery County ballots not yet counted.
Voters appear to have voted for a split, with a late Wednesday count now showing incumbent Democrats Tina Stoll, Cristian Fusco and Jonathan Kassa now ahead in their bids to win re-election, and Republican challenger Michael Kennedy the only newcomer in the top 4, with challengers Jessie Bradica, Harry Snyder and Fred Froehlich just behind incumbent Al Roesch.
County totals posted Wednesday morning had Kennedy topping all candidates at 11,346 votes, followed by Stoll with 11,248, then Bradica with 11,161, and Fusco with 11,022 — and the county reporting roughly 21,000 mail-in ballots still to be counted.
Among the trailing candidates, Snyder had the next-highest reported total at 10,807 votes, just ahead of fellow Republican Fred Froehlich with 10,792, then Kassa with 10,674. Roesch appeared to have the fewest votes of all eight candidates with 10,220 votes in a Wednesday update with 100 percent of precincts reported counted, but only 49,258 out of 70,425 mail-in ballots in the county counted.
An update Wednesday night moved the two-two split back to a three-one race, leaving Stoll tops among all candidates with a revised figure of 12,610 votes, followed by Fusco with 12,358, then Kassa in third with 11,996. Fourth among candidates was Kennedy with 11,603 votes as of a 7:38 p.m. Wednesday update, with Roesch just over 100 votes behind at 11,493, then followed by Bradica at 11,426, then Froehlich at 11,040 and Snyder at 11,034, and the county indicating roughly 17,000 mail-in ballots left to count.
The vote totals mark the end of heated race that drew large crowds and sparring between candidates and board members in school board meetings in August, September, and to a candidate debate and comment-filled meeting in October.
Shortly before midnight Tuesday night, the Republican team said “We will sleep well tonight knowing we did our best, we ran our campaign with true dignity and civility, and we made so many wonderful friends and met so many people along the way.”
Kennedy said in a video post just after 10 p.m. that he was still uncertain of the result, but asked for voters to stay engaged, and said he would comment further on Wednesday — adding in a Wednesday morning update that he was still awaiting further updates.
“Nothing’s official yet, so just keep on checking your updates for results. Just stay tuned, and thanks for the support, and thanks for being engaged,” he said.
All results are based on preliminary vote totals announced by Montgomery County officials as of Tuesday night and Wednesday morning, and are subject to change pending write-in, mail-in and absentee votes. For more information follow The Reporter on Twitter @lansreporter.
