REED CITY — Recognition and highlighting prominent athletes, and those who support them, was a focal point during this week's Reed City school board meeting.

During the meeting, Ryan Hansen, the district's athletic director, discussed the generosity from Reed City parents Troy and Ronda Wallace, whose donation made purchasing new volleyball jerseys for the junior varsity and varsity teams possible.

"Just an absolutely wonderful gift to our district,” Hansen said. "We honored both of them at a volleyball quad at the end of the year and that was not nearly enough.”

As a thank you, Hansen presented the couple with two lifetime passes to all home sports games at RCAPS.

Hansen invited the coaches and several members of the boys and girls cross country team to stand front and center. Hansen said the work ethic of the team showed in their efforts in regionals.

“Going to regionals, our boys and girls competed hard with 14 teams in both groups,” Hansen said. “We fell just short at fourth place in both groups. ... I just want to make sure we know what that fourth place means to us because we’re elated.

"We’re young, and we achieved some incredible things as a team this year," he added. "Looking forward we have a few strong runners coming back so I believe our future is very bright for both groups.”

Six Reed City cross country runners competed at the state finals Nov. 10 at the Michigan International Speedway. In the girls division, Nora Smoes came in at 86th; Paige Lofquist was 187th; and Clare Smoes 188th.

In the boys division, Ryan Allen was 37th; Gus Rohde 62nd; and Anthony Kiaunis 66th.

RCAPS cross country coach Rich Saladin noted the impressive academic performances of the team of students as a whole.

"We had several students who were academic All-State, which is fantastic," Saladin said. "I’ve been impressed with these kids both in and outside of school. We also wanted to thank the administration for their support."

Hansen also recognized the boys' football team for their performance throughout the season.

The Coyotes were CSAA Gold Conference champions and went 7-0 in conference and 9-2 overall.

“They were fifth ranked in the state at the end of the season, and they’ll be receiving a plaque that will represent that achievement,” Hansen said. "Back-to-back conference champions and this is the 10th conference championship overall for this program, which is pretty amazing."

Each player will receive a medal for their hard work, Hansen said.

Superintendent Michael Sweet said he is proud of the success the district’s sports teams have had despite the pandemic.

“I’m very impressed with what we’ve seen from our kids this year,” Sweet said. “I’ve been to many of the events that come out of our sports programs and I always enjoy watching our kids excel. I’m hoping we can keep these successes going because these are the kids representing our school in a great way.”
