New South Jacksonville trustee Jackie Killion is ready to get to work after being approved by the board Thursday and taking her seat.
“I’m a sponge,” Killion said. “I’m just trying to learn everything I can for the position.”
Killion also is taking on the role of chairwoman for the board’s public planning committee and joining other committees. She said she is ready to get settled in and learn as much as she can to help the village and its residents.
While she expects it to take some time to learn how different processes work, she is excited and believes she’ll be able to be a voice for the residents, she said.
“I want to be of help … we have to do something besides work and pay bills,” Killion said. “I want to do something that matters in someone’s life. I want to help people be heard.”
In addition to appointing Killion, the board also was given a deadline to create the outline for the full-time fire chief position, a topic that has been discussed for several months.
President Mike Broaddus said he gave the board a deadline of Jan. 3 to have the position created.
The position will go through committees — personnel, public protection and finance — before being discussed during a committee of the whole and then voted on by the board.
“In the past, these things didn’t go through the right steps,” Broaddus said.
In addition to the deadline for the chief’s position, Broaddus also has asked the board to develop a supervisory role for recreation, which would oversee recreation and tourism, and a public information officer.
The Oct. 25 storm that brought high winds and substantial damage to the village highlighted the need for a central media contact person and for centralized information distribution, Broaddus said.
While the village has people who distribute information on its behalf, the creation of a public information officer would provide one central person to coordinate the release of information during critical times and provide a contact person for the community, Broaddus said.
“That will take longer,” he said.
The Oct. 25 storm also led Broaddus to another decision — to present more citizenship awards.
“We had a complete strangers, someone who doesn’t even live here, down here that first morning to help,” Broaddus said. “We need to recognize the people in the village, people who help the village.”
Residents can nominate people for the award by reaching out to him, Broaddus said.
