STRONGSVILLE, Ohio -- George Grozan, first elected to the Strongsville school board in 2013 and re-elected in 2017, has resigned from the board, effective June 4.

It’s the second board resignation this year. Duke Evans, who was also first elected in 2013 and re-elected in 2017, resigned in January. Evans was replaced by Seth Roberts.

Now the board is seeking a replacement for Grozan. The deadline to apply is 4 p.m. Thursday (June 11).

In his June 1 resignation letter, Grozan said he was leaving the board “due to personal family commitments.” He did not return calls seeking further comment.

Grozan, in his letter, said he was a citizen member of the Strongsville Schools’ Facilities Committee for three years before deciding to run for the school board. At the time, Strongsville voters had just approved an $81 million bond issue to build a new middle school and renovate Strongsville High School.

“I made it my personal priority to verify that every part of the construction got done right,” Grozan said in the letter. “Not counting board meetings, I attended construction meetings once and often twice a week for nearly three years.”

Grozan said that during his tenure, the district replaced outdated computers with new Chromebooks and made sure each pupil was assigned one.

“I’m proud of the way we prioritized extracurriculars, giving kids a chance to play all sports, but especially my personal love, soccer, on proper fields with turf,” Grozan said.

Grozan was one of three board members caught up in controversy last year when then-board president Carl Naso said publicly that he routinely telephone-polled board members regarding certain district issues, a practice that might have violated Ohio Sunshine Laws.

At the time, Naso said he “generally” called Grozan first, then Evans, regarding information requests by board members to the district administration. Naso said that if he, Grozan and Evans agreed that an information request should not move forward, he would not contact the other two board members -- Richard Micko and Jane Ludwig -- since a majority of the board had settled the matter on the phone.

Naso was elected off the board in November. Micko is now board president.

The district has a limited amount of time to replace Grozan due to requirements under the Strongsville school board bylaws, which state that, after a board seat becomes vacant, the remaining members must fill that seat at the next regular or special board meeting, but not fewer than 10 days afterward. They also can’t wait more than 30 days.

Grozan’s resignation letter was accepted at the June 4 board meeting. The next regular board meeting is June 25, which is more than 10 days after June 4. Therefore, the board must appoint a replacement on June 25. If all applications are received by Thursday (June 11), the board will have two weeks to make a decision.

If the board fails to appoint a replacement by the June 25 meeting, the choice goes to Cuyahoga County Probate Court, according to school board bylaws, which are based on state law, according to district Communications Coordinator Dan Foust.

The district said that under Ohio law, those vying to replace Evans must be at least 18, registered to vote and living in the district. Applicants can visit strongnet.org or the district administrative offices, 18199 Cook Ave., to pick up an application.

Applicants must also provide a cover letter and resume. They can submit the material electronically to district Treasurer George Anagnostou at ganagnostou@scsmustangs.org or in person at the administrative offices. Electronic submissions must include the applicant’s signature.

The board is scheduled to interview candidates at a special meeting Saturday (Jan. 13). Grozan’s replacement will finish his term, which runs through December 2021. The replacement can choose to seek re-election in November 2021.
