During the regular Kingsland School Board meeting on June 15, the board voted to formally censure board member Noella Lund. Board chair Jackie Horsman stated that a special closed meeting of the board was held on June 8, and explained, “It was in regards to complaints that had been filed by community members and students/parents against board member Noella Lund.”
Horsman read aloud a resolution, which said that the concern centered around “postings on social media” and the resolution stated, in part, “Whereas the board received additional complaints regarding Miss Lund’s efforts to organize an independent and unlawful graduation ceremony for district students while identifying herself as a school board member… Board member Lund’s conduct has harmed the reputation of the district and the working relationships of the board and has increased divisiveness within the community.” The resolution also stated that any similar conduct in violation of Kingsland’s Code of Ethics could lead to further disciplinary action by the board. The board voted unanimously to approve the resolution as read, with Lund abstaining. All board members were in attendance (Jackie Horsman, Tiffany Mundfrom, Noella Lund, Natasha Howard, Maranda Emig, and Kyle Rader), as well as Superintendent Jim Hecimovich, Principal Scott Klavetter, Building and Grounds Director Jason Thompson, and Business Manager Amber Uhlenhake.
Community Education Director Becky Bicknese shared that Kingsland has chosen to cancel this year’s student trip to Washington D.C. She added that a trip to D.C. is tentatively planned for July 2021, but she added that this fall, the entire planning and registration process will begin anew, since some students who had signed up for 2020 may not wish to go in 2021, and vice versa. She added, “We are not making the call if the (2021) trip is a for-sure go until October 15.”
Business Manager Amber Uhlenhake submiited a report showing that Kingsland’s year-to-date revenues are just over $5.6 million, which is roughly $546,000 ahead of last year at this point. Expenses are at just under $5 million, roughly $203,000 lower than at this time last year.
Principal Klavetter submitted a report that stated, in part, “The time has come to upgrade the bulk of our student devices for our 1:1 technology program. Most of our current devices were purchased four years ago… which is why they are all becoming outdated at the same time.” Klavetter’s report also explained that a replacement plan was part of Kingsland’s capital budget that was approved in May. He also reported that the new plan will allow Kingsland to offer 1:1 technology devices for all students in grades K-12, rather than just grades 2-12.
Hecimovich gave public thanks for a donation, stating, “Valley Christian, they’ve been very generous over the years. They brought in donuts for all the staff during that last work week.” Becky Bicknese also offered thanks for a grant that Kingsland will receive to allow books to be given to Kingsland’s youngest students.
Hecimovich talked about the summer food service program, saying, “We’re not delivering these meals, they have to be picked up here (at the school).” He said Kingsland will attempt to get the word out about the availability of these “pick-up” meals, since very few students have been receiving these meals.
The board set the filing period for anyone wishing to run for school board. The filing period will begin July 28, and will close at 5 p.m. on August 11. The board’s next meeting will be a work session on July 6, at 6 p.m. Effective immediately and ongoing, the board will hold all regularly scheduled meetings at 6 p.m. unless announced otherwise. Until further notice, the meetings will continue to be held via phone or electronic technology, due to coronavirus guidelines. Superintendent Hecimovich said that while the board hopes to eventually offer “in person” meetings again, no date is known yet. When that happens, it will be announced beforehand.
