PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. -- New, preliminary information from a genetic study suggests your blood type could help determine how you might respond to coronavirus.
The preliminary data coming from 23andMe research suggests blood type O appears to protect against the virus.
More than 750,000 people participated in the study.

Preliminary data suggests type O blood appears to be protective against coronavirus compared to other blood types.
Those with type O blood were 9-18% less likely to test positive for coronavirus compared to the other groups.
People with type O blood who were exposed, were 13-26% less likely to test positive for coronavirus.
Dr. E. Leila Jerome Clay, Chief of Hematology at Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital, is not associated with the study but did comment on it.
"When people are in trauma, that’s the first blood you would look for because you know those antibodies are not present in O blood types," said Dr. Clay. "When you have O, you don’t have the A and the B antigen on it, so that may actually be protective.”
Dr. Clay adds people with type A have seen different outcomes.
“Patients that have had Coronavirus that have had a worse outcome with the disease have usually had the type A," she said.
Dr. Clay says the research does help give insight but more studies are needed.
"It’s still evolving, we still need to do more research," said Dr. Clay.
Meantime, Dr. Clay suggests people be mindful of their medical conditions and continue to be vigilant about protecting themselves with hand-washing, face coverings, and social distancing.
