The term 'retail therapy' has long been used to describe women's relationship with shopping.

Whether you love shopping or loathe it, there is usually an emotional reason behind our habits.

Once you can understand your shopping habits, you can become aware of your triggers, to help you make more informed decisions in future.

Here, Susie Hasler, who runs Styled By Susie, which specialises in styling women on a budget whose body shapes have changed due to having children, the menopause or weight gain, gives her insight.

The Social Shopper

You like shopping without an end goal. For you, it's more about the social interaction with a companion and you stop frequently for coffees and breaks.

Advantage: You are likely to have a positive association with shopping due to the social interaction.

Disadvantage: Without a shopping purpose, you're likely to make mistakes due to your friend's opinions or making rushed decisions.

The Therapy Shopper

Shopping is your reward for feeling good or feeling bad. It's a way to wind down, improve your mood and the definition of 'retail therapy'.

Advantage: It can be a mood booster when you feel low and a great way to reward yourself after a promotion or bonus.

Disadvantage: Like all quick fixes, the buzz can be short lived and it's not a healthy way to shop if it's covering up other emotions that need resolving.

The Giver

You love buying gifts for others, finding that perfect present for your loved one and would rather shop for someone else than yourself.

Advantage: It feels great making someone else feel good! You can brighten their day.

Disadvantage: If you never buy for yourself then it's important to address the imbalance and why you feel undeserving of the perfect gift for yourself and your own needs.

The Bargain Hunter

Even if you have the funds to buy something full price, you prefer the thrill of a discount, a voucher code or any type of sale. Shopping is a game to be won.

Advantage: You save money.

Disadvantage: This type of shopper experiences the most amount of guilt due to a disconnection with the product and you're likely to buy something just because it's cheap, whether you'll wear it or not.

The Informed Shopper

You shop with purpose and an end goal in sight. You make a list beforehand of items you need and you try everything on (this is how I tell my clients to shop).

Advantage: You save money in the long run, make better, more informed choices and develop a healthy relationship with shopping.

Disadvantage: You'll wish you had shopped this way sooner!
