Letter | SLV board should carefully choose new trustee - Santa Cruz Sentinel

gomotar.blogspot.com

On June 30, the SLVUSD Board adopted a resolution in support of equity and anti-racism in schools. As the Board has recognized the harm of institutional racism on students, the current opening for a new board member to replace a retiring trustee is an excellent opportunity for the Board to act on the principals they have laid forth.

When a board member leaves mid-term, they are replaced by the Trustees of the Board rather than public vote. I encourage the trustees to seek applicants who can represent sectors of the community that have long been underrepresented and fill this opening with someone who has been actively committed to the principles set forth in the resolution. Filling this opening in accordance with the values of the Board’s resolution should be the first step in the commitment to making our schools a place of inclusion for all.

The Sentinel welcomes your letters to the editor. Letters should be short, no more than 150 words. We do not accept anonymous letters. Letter-writers should include their full name as well as a street address and telephone number. We don’t publish those details in the newspaper, but need the information for verification purposes. Occasionally, we reject letters simply because we’ve had so many on the same subject. Submit your letters online at www.santacruzsentinel.com/submit-letters.
