LARGO, Fla. — The Pinellas County School Board is set to vote on Tuesday on whether to delay the start of school.

What You Need To Know

Superintendent Michael Grego has proposed pushing it back two weeks to August 24.

Some Pinellas County teachers said they would like to see school start virtually because they don’t feel comfortable returning to the classroom given the current number of Coronavirus cases.

Mara Garner has taught for 21 years in Pinellas County. She said she’ll be joining a group of teachers rallying ahead of the board meeting Tuesday afternoon. The teachers want the board to know how they feel about returning to classrooms.

“We are filled with fear, we are filled with dread and we don't feel the policies are in place to keep us safe,” said Garner.

Garner said teachers are concerned with class size and buses. She said given the number of students in each class, there’s no way to properly social distance. She also said buses are often filled to capacity, with three students assigned to one seat. All of which are reasons she thinks the start of school should be delayed.

“I think it should be delayed.  I think they should make the decision to begin virtually.  I think we should remain virtual until we see a sharp decline, close to zero cases, over not just a week period, but a three week period to ensure students, and staff members are safe,” said Garner.
