Linda Angona, the senior member of the Upland Unified School District Board of Trustees, has resigned, leaving the school board to decide whether to appoint a replacement before her seat comes up for election Nov. 3.

Angona’s resignation, effective June 30, ends 19 years on the Upland school board. It also came on the same day seven-year Superintendent Nancy Kelly retired.

The loss of two key players, combined with financial and teaching challenges brought on by the coronavirus pandemic, will test the school district, which has a student body of 10,500 students in 14 schools.

“A lot of things are difficult for school districts to deal with these days,” said Wes Fifield, who is in his 16th year on the school board, on Monday, July 6, 2020.

Fifield said Angona, who as board president, was “a calming voice” when crises erupted. “It was nice to have someone you can rely on and trust and who is intelligent and cares,” he said.

Lynn Jennifer Carmen Day, the new superintendent, has been on the job for about three days. She’s speaking with the district’s attorney on how the board shall proceed. That could result in an appointment to the board, she said on Monday, July 6.

“We need to work through that. We need to make sure we follow the education code on how we proceed,” Fifield said.

Angona, who is an elementary school teacher within the San Bernardino City Unified School District, said she was leaving in order to focus on her teaching.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has brought with it the opportunity to reflect on my priorities, and of prime importance during this time of upheaval in education is my teaching career. Since my students return on August 3, I want to turn my full attention to planning for the 2020-21 school year,” Angona said in a statement.

Angona helped start Vic’s Place in 1995, an after-school program in Upland for kindergarten through sixth graders that helps children with homework and their studies. The program was named after Angona’s late husband.

“I think what is best for her is best for the board also,” said Carmen Day. “She has to take care of her highest priorities, her teaching career and her family.”
