GOOD HOPE — The West Prairie Board of Education had further discussions about adding a student representative on the school board during Thursday’s meeting.

West Prairie superintendent Guy Gradert told the school board that he attended a webinar about student representatives on school boards. He learned during the webinar that 27 states including Illinois allowed having a student representative on the school board. He said that Illinois law only allowed student representatives to have an advisory role, which he said could benefit during curriculum and sports discussions.

Several board members shared their thoughts on adding a student representative to the school board. Board vice president Scott Vogler said that due to the adjustment period, a junior should be selected to serve a two-year term instead of a senior serving a one-year term. Board president Matt Menzel said there should be two student representatives in case one cannot come to the school board meetings. Board president Lee Moore said that teachers and administration should pick the student representative through an interview process.

Vogler said that when the student representative is chosen, he wanted to make sure that the student would take the role seriously with a swearing-in ceremony. He also asked if the student representative should take the school board training that all school board members have taken to help them understand their role on the school board. Gradert said that it would be a good idea for the Illinois Association of School Boards to start a pilot program for student board members.

The school board decided to have further discussions on having a student representative before voting on adding a student representative on the school board.

School updates

The school principals gave the school board updates on their respective schools. West Prairie High School principal Chad Cox said that the high school started a writing club with 20 students signed up. West Prairie Middle School principal Caitlin Watson and West Prairie Elementary School principal Jennifer Edholm both said that their respective students were able to handle wearing masks, but still had trouble understanding social distancing. Edholm said that she will allow elementary school students to return to in-person learning if remote learning does not work for them.

In other business, the school board approved to update board policies and to relocate a memorial stone to the front of the middle school. Gradert said that the work on the middle school gym roof will start around Oct. 2 and would take approximately three weeks for completion. He also said that the Regional Office of Education will have an annexation hearing to transfer a portion of the Southeastern school district to West Prairie on Sept. 22 at 7 p.m.

The next regularly scheduled school board meeting will be on Sept. 17 at 7 p.m. in the West Prairie High School modular building.
