PEORIA (WEEK) - Elected leaders of the Peoria Public Schools will decide Monday night whether District 150 high schools will compete in basketball this winter amid a second wave of COVID-19 infections.
Superintendent Dr. Sharon Desmoulin-Kherat is presenting to the school board a proposal to suspend the start of the upcoming season.
The board's action comes just a week after the Peoria Catholic Diocese announced it was delaying the start of the hoops season for its high schools.
Gov. JB Pritzker believes basketball is a high-risk activity during the pandemic, but the Illinois High School Association is moving ahead anyway with interscholastic competition. The organization said it has implemented safety measures aimed at preventing the spread of the coronavirus.
In a memo to the board, the superintendent said Illinois school districts must follow mandates from the Illinois Department of Public Health and the Illinois State Board of Education, regardless of liability issues and insurance coverage.
"If the Board wants to roll the dice that there will be no enforcement of the order or the guidance, the determination to play basketball should rest on whether the Board of Education can take measures to protect the health and safety of the players and coaches and the rest of the school community," Desmoulin-Kherat said.
The superintendent noted that districts deciding to play face possible legal action or the loss of state financial aid.
The school board meets Monday at 6:30 p.m.
