Denver Public Schools board member Tay Anderson was taken to a hospital for testing after collapsing at a Target.

Anderson, who suffered severe chest pains, is stable, according to a tweet signed by his family.

The family thanked Target staff and emergency medical technicians “for their help to ensure he was taken care of.”

Anderson, an at-large director with the school board, is a social and political activist who led George Floyd demonstrations over the summer.

Last week, Anderson tangled with Mayor Michael Hancock over allegations by Hancock and former Mayor Federico Peña that the DPS board was to blame for the recent departure of district Superintendent Susana Cordova. Anderson labeled the claim “unsubstantiated.”

In July, Anderson was injured and taken to a hospital during a protest outside a homeless camp in downtown Denver. Anderson said that Denver police pushed him to the ground. Videos from the scene, posted on social media, showed Anderson in the middle of a group that was challenging police over a camp eviction at Lincoln Park.

On Monday evening, more than 1,000 people liked the family’s Twitter post and more than 200 had commented. The comments were filled out by well wishers hoping and praying for a speedy recovery.
