MEDINA, Ohio -- The Medina Board of Education kicked off 2021 by making some changes to board leadership at its organizational meeting Monday (Jan. 11).

Rob Skidmore was elected to board president at the beginning of the meeting, and Rebecca Parkhurst became the board’s new vice president. Later in the meeting, all board members were assigned to various committees.

The board also passed a resolution to adjust compensation for board members to the maximum level provided under the Ohio Revised Code. This amounts to $125 per meeting and is limited to two meetings per month.

“The amount that our board members earn is a very minimal amount for the amount of work that they provide the schools and the communities as board members,” said Superintendent Aaron Sable.

“The way that it works for the Board of Education is that board members are paid per formal board meeting. There’s a lot more work that goes into operating a district and functioning as a board member than just these meetings,” he pointed out.

In other news, the board approved a number of standing resolutions. These included allowing the treasurer to secure advances from the auditor when funds are available, allowing the treasurer to invest inactive funds at the most productive interest rates, and allowing the superintendent to hire staff between board meetings.
