Longtime Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford could be switching teams this offseason, as it has been reported that the franchise is opening up trade talks surrounding the 12-year pro.
It just so happens that the Washington Football Team is in need of a passer, and Stafford is one that could make sense. It's no foregone conclusion that the two sides will become one in 2021, but should Stafford find his way to Washington, what type of quarterback would the team be getting?
This single mic'd up clip from Stafford's rookie year in 2009 pretty much sums it up.
The moment comes during a late-season matchup with the Cleveland Browns. With just seconds left and Detroit trailing 37-31, Stafford took a hit from a Cleveland defender that injured his left shoulder. The pass he threw was intercepted in the end zone, but defensive pass interference set up one final play for the Lions at the one-yard line.
However, it didn't seem as if Stafford was going to be on the field for that moment. He was laying down on the sideline in pain, and the Lions were preparing to send the backup quarterback into the game. Yet a timeout by the Browns gave Stafford a few more seconds to compose himself, and the rookie was determined to finish the game.
“Hey, that’s a timeout, I can play right?” Stafford said. “Help me up, I can throw the ball if you need me to throw the ball."
He did just that, trotting onto the field and throwing a touchdown to Brandon Pettigrew on the final play of the game. An extra-point would give Detroit the 38-37 victory, and though Stafford ran off the field with his left shoulder limp, he had delivered in an incredible moment.

In just his rookie season, that sequence is the ultimate example of who Stafford is as a player. A fierce competitor, he's going to do whatever it takes to help his team win. Even if that means playing through pain and injuries.
Even during his age-32 season in 2020, that toughness from Stafford was still on display. Despite dealing with injuries and COVID-19 exposure, the quarterback started all 16 games for the Lions and threw 4,804 yards and 26 touchdowns.
Prior to an injury that forced him to miss eight games in 2019, Stafford had not missed a game for the Lions in eight seasons.
There's no guarantee that the quarterback's potential uniform change this offseason puts him in the Burgundy and Gold. Yet if that scenario does happen, it's clear that Washington will be getting a quarterback that will do whatever it takes to help his team.
