National Park College recently welcomed Rhonda Harrington as the newest member of the board of trustees.

"It is a pleasure to welcome Dr. Harrington to the NPC Board of Trustees. Her experience and insights, particularly those in both public and higher education, will be extremely beneficial to the college," NPC President John Hogan said in a news release.

Harrington ran unopposed for Position 7 on the board in the annual school elections held March 3, 2020, but her term didn't begin until January.

"I am personally grateful to Rhonda for her decision to join the board. She comes to us at a very exciting time, as we continue our aggressive trajectory of meeting our students' needs and expectations," Hogan said.

"Being the newest board member for National Park College is a wonderful, exciting feeling. My background is education. I have taught at the university level and several different institutions. I was born and raised in Hot Springs. It's very exciting to be a part of this education venture here with all the exciting things happening at National Park," Harrington said.

Some of the main reasons Harrington filed for the position are her skill set and the experience she brings to the school.

"I am very familiar with the higher learning commission, with accreditations for degrees. I have experience in teaching advising students, so I kind of have a unique understanding of maybe what the faculty might bring to the table," Harrington said.

Being the newest board member is very exciting, she said, because she will have an opportunity to share ideas and share in the team atmosphere Hogan has created.

"It's like a family really because when I went through the orientation, I met with faculty members, staff members, and other board members. Everyone has just a growing excitement about what is going on here at National Park and what the future holds, and I'm very excited to be a part of that," Harrington said.

She said she wants the general community on campus and outside the greater Hot Springs area to know she brings a skill set of understanding of cooperation and inspiration for the new ideas for the college.

"I am the owner of a staffing agency here in town. I have a unique understanding about the workforce and what the requirements are for this area. I'm really looking forward to understanding more about how the skilled trades are also becoming very prominent here in National Park," Harrington said.

According to the news release, Harrington and her husband, Neal, own Express Employment Professionals, a small staffing agency in Hot Springs where she manages and implements client training for area supervisors, managers and future leaders.

Working in education was her childhood dream, she said, noting she used to pretend to be a teacher and would have her pretend students in front of her teaching.

Harrington earned a Bachelor of Science in elementary education and a Master of Science in early childhood education from Arkansas State University, and an Ed.D. in instruction, curriculum, and leadership from Memphis State University, the news release said.

"Harrington's education career started at the Jonesboro Kindergarten Center, where she taught for 12 years. She spent six years as an instructor and assistant professor at Arkansas State University, and six years as an assistant and associate professor at Henderson State University," the release said.

"While teaching at HSU, Dr. Harrington participated in the first continuous four-year degree program in education offered entirely at the National Park College campus," it said.

"I would just like to thank the board for voting me in and giving me this opportunity to serve and participate in a very unique time with COVID going on," Harrington said. "I'm very thrilled to be a part of that."
