Jaguar built just 53 original C-Types back in the Fifties. Of those cars, just 43 were sold to private owners. Unlike some of the race cars, which enjoyed more power and disc brakes, the production C-Type made just 200 horsepower, and made do with drums on all four corners. Now, Jaguar is giving private owners another chance to make their dream of C-Type ownership come true.
Jaguar announced Wednesday it will be building an ultra-limited run of C-Type continuation cars to celebrate the racing icon's 70th anniversary. The cars will be built by the Jaguar Land Rover Classic Center in the U.K., designed to replicate the works team car that won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1953.
A total of eight C-Type continuation cars will be built, each equipped with standard disc brakes and a 3.4-liter inline-six with triple Weber 40DCO3 carburetors making 220 horsepower. Buyers will also be able to option an FIA-approved harness retention system, should they want to enter the car in historic racing events.
To be clear, this is more than just another replica built from scratch. The company has gone the extra mile to ensure its continuation cars are as close to the real thing as possible:
Building on the experience gained with previous Jaguar Classic Continuation programs for Lightweight E-Type, XKSS and D-Type, Jaguar Classic engineers consulted the Jaguar archives and cross-referenced scan data taken from an original C-Type in conjunction with the latest computer aided design (CAD) technology, to create the most authentic new C-Type possible. Exclusive access to original engineering drawings and company records created by the original C-Type development team–including Malcolm Sayer, competitions manager Lofty England, and engineers William Heynes, Bob Knight and Norman Dewis–ensure the 1953 specifications are accurately maintained.
As a part of the program, Jaguar is also launching a dedicated C-Type configurator open to the public, allowing anyone to build the Fifties racer of their fantasies. There are 12 exterior colors and eight interior colors to choose from, along with optional decals and badging.
Jaguar hasn't released a timeline of when the limited run of cars will be built, but says the set should be ready for a "racing-inspired celebration event for their owners in 2022." The company hasn't revealed pricing, but considering how expensive real C-Types are, it's sure to be a relative bargain.
