Drawing from the Tampa Bay area’s business community, the Florida Board of Governors on Wednesday recommended Shilen Patel and Melissa Seixas for soon-to-be open spots on the University of South Florida’s board of trustees.
Patel is the CEO of the HealthAxis Group, an IT solutions provider for health care organizations and providers. According to his HealthAxis biography, he is chairman of the Creative Entrepreneurship Lab, a nonprofit supporting entrepreneurial activity in the USF area, and of TiE Tampa Bay Angel Fund, which supports start-ups and promotes “awareness of angel investing” in the area.
Patel also was a founder of Central Bank and the owner of Cover2 Ventures, a business incubator and management company. He is the son of Kiran and Pallavi Patel, local philanthropists and physicians who have donated to USF. Kiran Patel was a previous member of the university’s board.

Seixas is the vice president of government and community relations at Duke Energy Florida and a member of the USF St. Petersburg Campus Board.
A former USF student with a master’s degree from the university, she was part of the school’s consolidation task force in 2018. She previously chaired the St. Petersburg Downtown Partnership and served on boards of the Clearwater Marine Aquarium, Ruth Eckerd Hall, the Pasco County Economic Development Council and the Pinellas County Urban League.

USF’s board is composed of 13 members, six appointed by the governor, five appointed by the Board of Governors as well as the Faculty Senate and student government presidents. Last week, Gov. Ron DeSantis announced the appointment of Will Weatherford, the former Florida House speaker, to the board.
The vacancies were posted on the Board of Governors’ website and applicants were vetted by a board committee. All three newly named trustees must be confirmed by the Florida Senate.
