The Liberty Hill Economic Development Corporation (EDC) heard from four applicants seeking to fill two vacant positions, ultimately naming Adrienne Hughes and Michael Helbing to the board.

The City Council made it official Monday, approving both selections.

They will replace outgoing members Jack Harkrider and Steve Snell who have recently stepped away from the board. The other two applicants for the vacant positions were Demetrice Gonzalez and Christy Gessler.

Each of the four applicants were asked to tell the board about their background and experience, then the board had the opportunity to ask questions of each before discussing the candidates in closed session.

For Helbing, who has worked for HEB for nearly 25 years and has been in Liberty Hill almost five years, serving on the EDC Board is one way to be involved and give back.

“We’re growing and we’re growing fast and it’s just a civic duty to help grow the city the right way,” he said. “The housing market is booming and booming, and one of the things I hear from everybody is wanting to slow property taxes. Bringing the right businesses will help with that property tax hike.”

Hughes, a real estate broker who has been in Liberty Hill since 2008, was first introduced to the inner-workings of the EDC when she applied for a pair of EDC grants for her downtown office. That experience spurred her interest in serving on the board.

“I was a very lucky recipient to get a facade grant,” Hughes said. “I’ve seen kind of how it works and had a peek on the inside and I really like what we’re doing. We have a lot of people here in Liberty Hill that are resistant to the growth and it’s coming whether we want it to or not. We can jump on board and do it responsibly and do it with the community in mind.”

Much of her community involvement has revolved around other pursuits, but being more involved in the business development side is a new opportunity for her.

“One of the things that we focus on is community,” she said. “We’re huge supporters of the schools and we’re really big supporters of the library.”
