Longmont should have representation on RTD Board
It’s unacceptable that Longmont will no longer have representation on RTD
Earlier this week, the Boulder County Commissioners voted 2-1 to appoint a Broomfield resident to serve on the RTD board, passing over four applicants in Longmont. I am incredibly disappointed in the commissioners’ decision to cite financial acumen as the determining factor in their decision, and agree with Matt Jones’ comment in the Times-Call, when he said that the RTD Board is a “public-policy group and not a financial panel.” The commissioners seem to have let personal political vendettas outweigh common sense. Longmont will no longer have representation on the RTD Board. So the city that has the biggest need for effective advocacy will have lost a voice at the table.
Obviously RTD is in financial trouble. Broad, innovative policy solutions are needed to reform our transportation systems in a COVID-19 world. However, as the commissioners and all elected officials know too well, budgeting and financial management don’t happen in a vacuum. The District I position on RTD should have been someone from Longmont, who can support and advocate for the completion of the rail project that is so grossly overdue, starting with the Peak Rail Service. I hope that the new commissioners, once seated, will take Longmont’s transportation needs into greater consideration if ever faced with this type of decision in the future. And I hope that the new District I commissioner, despite not residing in Longmont, will take into account the need to complete the Northwest Rail Project, starting with Peak Rail, as soon as possible.
