BARNEGAT, NJ - Six Barnegat residents have expressed an interest in filling the unexpired term of a school board member who resigned last month. The Board of Education will hold a Special Meeting on November 17th to interview and make a selection from the list of applicants. 

The vacant seat was created when longtime school board member Lauren Sarno stepped down last month. Sarno's replacement will serve for the balance of her term, which runs until the Reorganization Meeting in January 2022.

Two candidates, Justin Deemer and George Fedorcyzk, Jr. were on the November ballot. Scott Sarno, a former board member and president has submitted an application. Robert Ash, Tara Rider, and Brian Wilke have also expressed an interest in filling the vacant seat.

Each of the applicants will be interviewed by the board during the public portion of the special meeting. They will be questioned separately to avoid hearing the answers of the other candidates.

"We will ask predetermined questions," explained Board of Education President Michael J. Hickey. "We will then retire to Executive Session, and come back to make nominations and vote."

Voters cast ballots to fill three open Board of Education seats earlier this month. Sources have indicated that the current results are not final as all provisional votes have not been counted.

The process was slowed down when the Board of Elections needed to shut down for at least one day to a COVID-19 exposure.

The tally as of Saturday in order of respective votes is as follows: Alicia Bivins, 4929, Doreen Continanza, 4355, Sandra Churney, 4310, Christopher Sharpe, 4120, George Fedorczyk, Jr. 4,028, Robert Geddes, 3669, and Justin Deemer, 2868,
