6 Type Combinations Exclusive To Legendary And Mythical Pokemon - TheGamer

While there were originally only 16 different Pokemon types in the first generation Pokemon games, the addition of Dark and Steel-type in the second generation games and Fairy-type in the sixth generation games brought the number of Pokemon types up to 18 total, with many Pokemon having dual typing.

Through over eight generations and almost 1,000 Pokemon total, somehow, not all type combinations have been used yet, even with the amount slowly but surely decreasing over time. Some other type combinations that have been used once only belong to one Pokemon species, with a handful belonging exclusively to specific Legendary Pokemon.

6 Heatran

Heatran, the Lava Dome Pokemon first introduced in the fourth generation games, Pokemon Diamond and Pearl versions, is the only Pokemon to be both a Fire and a Steel-type. Because of its dual typing, Heatran also has the most double resistances of all Pokemon, being doubly resistant to Bug, Grass, Fairy, Ice, and Steel-type attacks.

Heatran is also interesting in that it was previously the only Legendary Pokemon that could be either male or female, with a 50 percent chance of each, until the introduction of Kubfu and Urshifu. Heatran has never had a significant role in the games, being optional side content rather than a mandatory Legendary Pokemon encounter, except for players who want to complete the Pokedex.

5 Terrakion

Terrakion, the Cavern Pokemon and one of the members of the Swords of Justice quartet alongside Cobalion, Virizion, and Keldeo, was first introduced in the fifth generation games, Pokemon Black Version and White Version. Terrakion is the only Pokemon to be both a Rock type and a Fighting type, a type combination that seems like it would have happened in an earlier generation but somehow didn't.

Based on the character Porthos from The Three Musketeers, Terrakion is the biggest and strongest member of the Swords of Justice and is capable of destroying a castle by itself. Unfortunately, due to its type combination, it's weak against Grass, Ground, Fairy, Fighting, Psychic, Steel, and Water, and for a Legendary Pokemon, it isn't all that strong stat-wise. Terrakion's Justified ability doesn't help much either, as it only activates when hit by a Dark-type move, something not recommended against Fighting-type Pokemon.

4 Kyurem

Kyurem, the Boundary Pokemon, was introduced as the third legendary of the Tao trio in Pokemon Black Version and White Version, and is the cover legendary of the direct two-version sequel Black Version 2 and White Version 2. Kyurem is part Ice type and part Dragon type, which means it doesn't have the weakness to Ice attacks that most other Dragon-type Pokemon do, but it is still weak against Dragon, Fairy, Fighting, Rock, and Steel due to its typing.

Kyurem can also combine with either Zekrom or Reshiram via the DNA Splicers to become Black Kyurem or White Kyurem, respectively. Despite Zekrom being part Electric type and Reshiram being part Fire Type, Black Kyurem and White Kyrurem keep the same typing as base form Kyurem. Still, they do learn the exclusive moves Fusion Bolt and Fusion Flare, which are a Fire and an Electric-type attack, respectively, alongside the exclusive Ice-type moves Freeze Shock and Ice Burn.

3 Volcanion

Volcanion, the Steam Pokemon, was the final Pokemon introduced in the sixth generation Pokemon games, Pokemon X and Y versions, and is the only Pokemon that is both Fire and Water-type. Due to its typing, Volcanion is only weak against three types, Electric, Ground, and Rock, and while that isn't as great as the Pokemon that are only weak to one type, it's still better than many others.

Although Volcanion is the first Pokemon with this type combination to be officially introduced, the idea of a Pokemon possibly having this type combination has been around since at least the second generation since the unused Pokemon Bomushika may have also been a dual Fire and Water-type.

2 Nihilego

Because it is an Ultra Beast, the Parasite Pokemon Nihilego is not technically a Legendary Pokemon or Mythical Pokemon but is often still classified as a Legendary alongside other Ultra Beasts for ease of use. Nihilego is part Rock-type and part Poison-type, which is a rather odd type combination for a humanoid-looking Jellyfish, but it may be because of the species of Jellyfish and microscopic parasites that it's based on.

Because of its type combination, Nihilego is weak against Psychic, Steel, and Water-type moves as expected, but is the weakest against Ground-type moves, which have quadruple effectiveness against it since Ground-type moves are strong against both Rock-type and Poison-type Pokemon.

1 Marshadow

From first glance, unaware players may assume Marshadow is a Dark type Pokemon or Dark and Ghost type instead of its actual typing, but this Gloomdweller Pokemon first introduced in the seventh generation Pokemon games, Pokemon Sun and Moon versions, is the only Pokemon to be part Fighting type and part Ghost type.

Marshadow's type combination is unique in that it makes it immune to both Normal-type and Fighting-type moves and makes it more of a threat to Normal-type Pokemon because it can't be hit with their Normal-type moves but has moves that are super effective against them. Despite its strength against Normal-type Pokemon, Marshadow still has four weaknesses, Fairy, Flying, Ghost, and Psychic-type moves, making it less of a threat.
