As Great Basin Incident Management Type 3 Team 4, under Incident Commander Erik Newell, reaches the end of their tour in Alaska, command of the Dalton Highway Complex will be transferred to incoming Incident Commander Tyler McCowan’s Idaho Incident Management Type 3 Team 1. The new team will assume responsibility tomorrow morning at 0800.
Three fires are included in the Dalton Highway Complex: the Douglas Fire 336, Curky Fire 318, and Snowden Fire 330. All three fires are located along the Dalton Highway in the Yukon and Tanana Districts. Incident objectives are firefighter and public safety, monitoring the fires, and protecting infrastructure such as the Alaska Pipeline, mines, and the Dalton Highway.
Heavy smoke on the Dalton Highway is reducing visibility. Please slow down, drive with headlights on, and exercise extreme caution in these areas. Road shoulders are narrow, pulling off to take photos is dangerous and not recommended. Arctic Circle Campground remains closed while firefighting activity is ongoing.
Red flag warnings are in effect in the interior of the state for thunderstorms, lightning, and a high likelihood of new fire starts. Temperatures will be in the 70’s to 80’s. Gusty winds are likely in the vicinity of the storms. Storms may be dry or may be accompanied with rain or hail.
