Honda made waves on Thursday when it announced that the Civic Type R is once again the fastest front-wheel drive car to ever lap the Nürburgring Nordschleife, setting a time of 7:44.881. The company had already revealed that the record was set on optional Pilot Sport Cup 2 tire, but the European version of the brand's release reveal that the car also got an added boost from a little bit of weight saving.
The press release says the resulting Civic was actually a lighter variant called the Type R S grade. The car will apparently be offered only in left-hand drive European markets, but, other than that and the fact that it will be lighter, Honda has not officially shared any other details on the differences between this car and the Civic Type R available in showrooms throughout the U.S.
However, CarScoops reports that the Civic Type R S grade is similar to the Civic Type R Limited Edition offered in the car's last generation. To decrease weight, the report claims that the car has cut out the satellite navigation hardware, air conditioning, parking sensors, cargo nets, and rear tonneau cover. Additionally, the rear-view mirror comes without an auto-dimming feature and the side-view mirrors are only adjustable manually. It is unclear how much weight the changes save over the standard Civic Type R. Honda of Europe has not yet responded to a request by Road & Track to confirm any details on the Civic Type R S grade.
