The Ressence Type 8S In Sage Green Review - HODINKEE

There are more than a few advantages to attending Watches & Wonders. The first and most obvious is getting firsthand looks at all the newness from brands industry-wide. Another lesser talked-about perk is the people we get to interact with especially when we talk about independent brands. Benoit Mintiens, the founder of Ressence might just be the most interesting man in the biz and he continues to create some of the most boundary-pushing timekeepers to boot.

Last year, I got an advanced look at the Type 8C in Cobalt Blue. I distinctly remember being taken in by the form of the watch, the lightness of the titanium, the function of the winding caseback, and the futuristic nature of it. My wife Kasia shot the photos for that review. I mention that point specifically because, sitting in the Ressence booth in the Palexpo, Mintiens reminded me how much enjoyed one of the photos from that year-old article – with the watch nestled on a pink furry pillow.

It's not often you have those sorts of conversations with brand founders. And that conversation came amidst a new colorway for the Type 8S in sage green. Typically a new dial color is nothing more than just that. But speaking with Mintiens changed my understanding of just how much time and effort goes into choosing the exact shade of blue or green on these watches, and heightens my appreciation for it.

On top of that, I can't recall ever really seeing any watch with a dial done in this shade of green. In some lighting, it's an almost pale turquoise blue. I was in the room with a few of my colleagues and we found ourselves passing the new Type 8C sage green around to each other. When it came to me I strapped it on my wrist and immediately recalled the feeling I had with the cobalt variant. At nearly 43mm, the watch wears compact on the wrist because there are effectively no lugs extending from beyond the case.

The tall, dramatically domed dial actually serves to make that 43mm sizing feel less broad and brings new avenues for legibility due to the sloped viewing angles. Of course, I was familiar with the watch, but having only seen it once a year before, I found myself taken with it once again.

I unstrapped the light metal from my wrist and turned the wheel affixed to the caseback which operates as a crown and allows you to manipulate the watch and set the time. Behind the closed caseback is what the brand calls a customized and reinforced 2892/2 base caliber. It offers 36 hours of power reserve and beats at 4Hz. The only question left for me to answer it seemed, was which color do I prefer?

Ressence

In many ways, the blue from last year feels slightly more conventional compared to the sage green. That's if you remove all of the unconventional design motifs of the actual watch. And of course, I'm picking nits here because both of these pieces offer a tremendous value proposition into a line of watches from Ressence that tend to be out of most budget ranges. At $14,500, you get yourself into the Ressence ecosystem with a genuinely interesting watch that you likely won't encounter walking down the street.

Ressence

I hope Mintiens and Ressence continue to iterate on the Type 8C because, for me, it's about as cool as it gets for the money. But enough from me. Where do you all stand: Cobalt blue or sage green?
