Shawano School Board Asks Grams To Resign After Social Media Post

SHAWANO,WI- Shawano School District Board of Education met on Sunday To discuss a social media post shared by a board member Mart Grams.

The post stated “George Floyd has been drug-free for two months now “

School board president Tyler Schmidt told the board that he has received numerous complaints phone calls and emails from all around the world within the last 12 hours.

Schmidt called a special meeting to propose the following resolution.

WHEREAS, Board members and school administration have received complaints regarding the contents of Board Member Mart Grams’ social media activity beginning on July 11, 2020; and

WHEREAS, Board members and school administration havereceived requests for the removal of Mart Grams from the Boardof Education; and

WHEREAS, the Board, acknowledging those requests, and having evaluated the Board’s authority, has concluded that a Board Member may only be removed from office through recall by the electorate pursuant to Wis. Stat. § 9.10; by a judge pursuant to Wis. Stat. § 17.13; or by resignation tendered by the board member and accepted by affirmative vote of a majority of the Board. The Board of Education does not have authority to remove, suspend, or in any way restrict the full membership of one of its duly elected members; and

WHEREAS, the Shawano School District Board of Education does, notwithstanding the above, believe it is appropriate and necessary for the Board to formally condemn and disavow conduct of any Board member when a Board member behaves in a way that is unbecoming of the public position of an elected school board member and has a clear tendency or intent to bring disrepute upon the District, to reflect poorly upon the District, and to harm the educational mission of the District; and

WHEREAS, the Board does, hereby establish by formal resolution that Mart Grams’ conduct is such conduct that requires that the Board take official action to condemn such conduct and to formally censure Mr. Grams for conduct that illustrates he is unfit to serve the Shawano School District community as a member of the Board of Education;

​​NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that:

1. On July 12, 2020, the Board of Education for the Shawano School District held a special meeting to consider the contents of this resolution and to address complaints received regarding the social media commentary by Board Member Mart Grams; and
2. The Board finds that the statements made by Mr. Grams concerning the death of George Floyd were irresponsible, inflammatory, and racially and socially insensitive; and
3. The Board disavows the statements and any and all commentary by Mr. Grams on this subject matter and notes emphatically that his statements are made as an individual and not as a representation of the Shawano School District or the Board of Education as a whole or any of its other board members; and
4. The Board hereby issues by way of this resolution, a formalcensure to Mr. Grams stating, in the strongest terms possible, the Board’s opposition to statements made by Mr. Grams, its condemnation of the use of racially derogatory terminology andof his irresponsible statements mocking the death of Mr. Floyd; and
5. The Board asserts that Mr. Grams conduct is harmful to the educational mission of the Shawano School District and its commitment to equal opportunity and treatment of all individuals, and is not representative of the values of the Board, the District, and the Community; and
6. Mart Grams has established that he is unfit to represent the community as a member of the Board of Education and ought to immediately, in the best interests of the Shawano School District and the Board of Education, tender his immediate and unconditional resignation from the Board.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that execution of this Resolution is conclusive evidence of the Board of Education’s approval of this action and official action and position statedherein and adopted at the meeting of the Board held on July 12, 2020.

Adopted by the Shawano Board of Education, this 12th day of July, 2020.

  1. The board approved the resolution by a unanimous vote. Grams was not at the meeting as he called TCH daily news.com that he had a prior obligation scheduled.
