Fire crews are going to transition the YMCA Fire into a less aggressive Type 4 incident, according to a press release Sunday evening.
In the update, fire officials stated that the fire is at 303 acres and 60% contained.
On Sunday, two hand crews and one engine continued mopping up, as well as line construction in areas that are accessible.
An afternoon thunderstorm that brought rain to Fremont County did little to help attack the wildfire. Crews sought shelter from the storm that primarily brought gusty winds to that area and little rain.
Officials stated that established control lines on the west and south sides of the fire held through the storm. The northern edge of the fire is in steep, rocky terrain that is inaccessible to ground resources. Crews will continue monitoring that part of the fire’s perimeter, but officials stated that without safe access, crews cannot construct a control line to consider the fire “contained.”
The Type 1 helicopter will remain on the north side of the wildfire Monday to address any future hot spots. Isolated spots along the north edge or still-burning interior fuels may produce smoke visible from Cañon City.
Incident Commander Nick Boucher and Incident Commander Trainee Don Iles, both of the Helena-Lewis and Clark National Forest, will be leading the resources assigned to the YMCA Fire. The press release stated that because the fire is transitioning to a smaller organization, Monday morning will be the final formal YMCA Fire update issued unless notable events occur.
The Facebook page, Inciweb site, and Twitter feed will continue to be updated as information becomes available.
