One of the most influential changes to the Pokémon series in recent years was the addition of an entirely-new type for the first time in more than a decade. With the release of Generation VI, the Fairy-type was added, bringing a monumental shakeup to the battle scene and giving Dragon-types something to truly fear.

With the release of the Fairy-type, in-game lore suggested that Professor Sycamore had discovered the new type and realized some existing Pokémon were improperly typed. Officials then changed the classification of those 22 Pokémon to be Fairy-type. Here are all 22 Pokémon that were changed to the Fairy-type when it was introduced in Generation VI.

10 Cleffa, Clefairy, and Clefable

It's probably no shocker that a pink sprite-like Pokémon with "-fairy" in its name and a title of "the Fairy Pokémon" was converted to the Fairy-type. In Generation V and earlier, Clefairy, its evolution Clefable, and its Generation II pre-evolution Cleffa were all considered the Normal-type.

Upon release, these three were converted entirely to Fairy-types, dropping the Normal-type altogether. While most Pokémon that are said to have a connection to space are Psychic- or Rock-type, Clefairy, which is said to come from the moon, is bucking this trend altogether.

9 Togepi, Togetic, and Togekiss

Cleffa wasn't the only Generation II Baby Pokémon to be converted to the Fairy-type. Series staple Togepi, which was once just Normal-type, also received a Fairy-type reclassification and dropped its Normal-typing.

Its evolutions also gained the Fairy-type, but still retained their Flying-type. Togetic and Togekiss are now Flying/Fairy-dual-types. Before this, they were Normal/Flying. Interestingly, no other Pokémon has the same type combination as Togetic and Togekiss, making them the only Fairy/Flying-type Pokémon in the series.

8 Snubbull and Granbull

One of the few Pokémon that received a surprising reclassification to the Fairy-type for many people was Snubbull and its evolution, Granbull. However, it shouldn't be that much of a surprise given its title — the same as Clefairy's — as the Fairy Pokémon.

Snubbull and Granbull were both considered Normal-types before the conversion and are now pure Fairy-types. Most Pokémon that were converted to the Fairy-type were Normal-types, but not in every case.

7 Igglybuff, Jigglypuff, and Wigglytuff

Returning to the Generation II Baby Pokémon takes this list to Igglybuff. This Baby Pokémon, plus its evolutionary relatives Jigglypuff and Wigglytuff, were all converted to Fairy-type in Generation VI.

Unlike the others already mentioned on this list, however, these three retained their Normal-typing as well. Now, Igglybuff, Jigglypuff, and Wigglytuff are Normal/Fairy-types. Why it was decided that Jigglypuff would remain a Normal-type but Clefairy, Snubbull, and others would not, is unclear.

6 Mime Jr. and Mr. Mime

One of the easiest Fairy-type conversions to forget is Mr. Mime. This creepy, strange mime Pokémon went from being a plain-old Psychic-type to now being Psychic/Fairy-type. Joining Mr. Mime in this conversion was, of course, its pre-evolution and Baby form, Mime Jr.

In Generation VIII, Mr. Mime was given a new regional form and evolution in Mr. Rime. However, neither of these Pokémon are Fairy-types. Instead, they're Psychic/Ice-types. Strangely, Galarian Mr. Mime is the only Pokémon that received a regional form, a new regional evolution, but still evolves from a non-regional form, as Mime Jr. did not receive a Galarian form.

5 Azurill, Marill, and Azumarill

Why did so many Baby Pokémon receive a Fairy-type conversion? Azurill is yet another one of these. This Baby Pokémon was changed from a pure Normal-type to a Normal/Fairy-type upon the release of Generation VI.

More interesting, though, is Azurill's evolutionary relatives. Marill and Azumarill, introduced one generation earlier than their Baby form, were both Water-types before Fairy was added. Now, both are Water/Fairy-types, giving them an even better edge in battle in many contexts.

4 Ralts, Kirlia, and Gardevoir

One of the more famous and beloved Fairy-type conversions is that of the Ralts family. Prior to Generation VI, Ralts, Kirlia, and Gardevoir were all just plain Psychic-types. With the release of Fairy, though, they all became Psychic/Fairy-types. Gardevoir's Mega Evolution makes great use of this with its Pixilate ability.

Gallade, Kirlia's other evolution, remained unchanged as a Psychic/Fighting-type. The addition of Fairy-type for Gardevoir pulls it even on the interesting type combo with Gallade, which is great.

3 Mawile

The only single-stage Pokémon that was converted to the Fairy-type is poor, lonely Mawile. It isn't, of course, actually lonely, but it seems to stand alone on this list without any evolutionary relatives. Prior to Generation VI, Mawile was a pure Steel-type. However, now it's a Steel/Fairy-type, which is a really cool combination.

Mega Mawile, like Mega Gardevoir, can also make great use of its new Fairy typing with moves like Play Rough. Its ability, Huge Power, also doubles its attack stat, making it one of the highest possible attack stats in the series.

2 Cottonee and Whimsicott

Bringing up the final spot on the list is two Pokémon that are from Generation V. Unlike the others on this list, these two spent only their original generation as monotypes, being converted only a generation later with Fairy's release in Generation VI.

Cottonee and Whimsicott were both pure Grass-types when they were introduced. However, they received a Fairy-type reclassification, now standing as Grass/Fairy-types. They'd be the only Pokémon introduced later than Generation III to receive the reclassification.

1 Bonus: Altaria and Audino

While Audino and Altaria were not reclassified to be Fairy-types, they did both receive Mega Evolutions that were Fairy-type.

Audino is a Normal/Fairy-type Pokémon when Mega Evolved while just Normal-type otherwise. Altaria is a Dragon/Flying-type before Mega Evolution and then becomes the only Dragon/Fairy-type in the Pokémon world.
