OLMSTED FALLS, Ohio -- After serving more than 15 years on the Olmsted Falls Board of Education, Joe Bertrand resigned his position effective Oct. 1 citing personal reasons.

The district is currently accepting applications through Oct. 13. The appointee will serve the rest of Bertrand’s term, which goes through the end of 2021.

“We have 30 days to appoint a board member,” said Olmsted Falls Board of Education President Holly Neumann. "We’ll conduct interviews between Oct. 15 and 20. We hope to appoint the seat by Oct. 31.

“We’re looking for someone who is super-engaged and willing to collaborate with other board members, the superintendent and treasurer. We want someone who is going to ask a lot of questions and really dig in and understand.”

The board president said the ideal applicant will have an understanding of school finances and a familiarity with the district.

As far Bertrand’s service to the community, Neumann called him “an outstanding person” and “one of the finest community members that I know.”

“He served with integrity,” Neumann said. "He was an outstanding fiscal agent for the school district.

“Joe really took time to ask a lot of good questions, was very engaged and just an outstanding leader. As president for several years, he was a really outstanding leader.”

This isn’t the only position the Olmsted Falls Board of Education is looking to fill. Treasurer/CFO Emily Weisbarth’s last day is today (Oct. 7). She’s leaving the district to become an assistant treasurer with Lakewood City Schools.

“We just hired interim-treasure Mark Hullman until we find a permanent treasurer,” Neumann said. “Mark was our former treasurer before Emily.”

Olmsted Falls City Schools Director of Communications Kim Petrina confirmed K-12 Business Consulting, Inc. is being paid $7,900 to oversee the treasurer search services for the district.

“We look forward to working collaboratively with K-12 and their team,” Petrina said. “They specialize in working with Ohio public school districts on treasurer searches and have extensive experience in this area.”

Neumann added, “We’re hoping to have a new treasurer hired and approved by our Nov. 19 board meeting.”
