New upcoming studies are suggesting that people with Type ‘O’ blood group may have a slight advantage during this pandemic of COVID-19. At least two studies from last week cite the fact that people with Type ‘O’ blood group have a lower risk of COVID-19 infection. This also means people with such blood group will not suffer severe outcomes of the disease along with organ failures.

The study

The study was conducted in 473,654 PCR tested Danish individuals for the disease and 2,204,742 non-tested individuals. It was seen that people with Type ‘O’ blood group were fewer in number with the majority of people accounting for ‘A,’ ‘B,’ and ‘AB’ type blood group. The study results found that people with Type ‘O’ blood group were less likely to get infected from COVID-19, whereas in other blood types, the chances were higher. Variation among blood distributions also occurs over ethnic subgroups; therefore, researchers also controlled ethnicity. This gives the findings of the study, a strong foundation added to one of the researchers.

In addition to this, another retrospective study also found that people with type ‘A’ or ‘AB’ exhibit greater symptoms of COVID-19 when compared to type ‘O’ or ‘B.’ Although the study involved a smaller number of 95 individuals, results found out that people with type ‘A’ or ‘AB’ require ventilation and dialysis due to kidney complications when compared to other types. Also, it was seen that people with Type ‘A’ or ‘AB’ experienced severe organ complications and spent more time in ICUs than other types. But noticeably, the duration of hospitalization was significantly the same in both the groups. Experts add that these studies brought out the effect of blood types on the disease. They hope further studies will bring out more insights into how blood groups can affect different organs. Scientists also hope to bring further insight into the long terms effects of the disease on the surviving population.
