Amid Challenges, Changing School Board Swears In New Members - Bay News 9

TAMPA, Fla. — Hillsborough County Schools is welcoming three new school board members Tuesday, all former educators and all who unseated incumbents in the November election.

"For me one of the biggest challenges is the academic equity," Incoming board member Nadia Combs said.  "I'm really concerned that the students that are e-learning are not getting what they need to get."

Combs will be sworn in today into the District 1 seat, after defeating Steve Kona in the November 3 runoff election.

It is not a popular time to be a school board member. 

Recently, the board has made tough decisions concerning the ongoing pandemic and tough decisions trying to shore up budget shortfalls that led to a recent shuffle and cutbacks of temporary teachers.

All three board members being sworn in today including Combs, Jessica Vaughn in District 3 and Henry "Shake" Washington in District 5 could hold enough votes to swing big decisions in a different direction than the board previously steered.

Superintendent Addison Davis shared his optimism with us as a new chapter in the school district is opened.

"A majority of the new board members that are coming on, they've all been in education," Davis said.  "So being able to connect with them about their experiences, to talk about instruction, to look at how we can further support teachers and administrators, I think it is going to be a really great opportunity."

The school district budget and eLearning are expected to be the two biggest areas of concern for parents and teachers in the coming months.

With the unknowns of the ongoing pandemic still looming, the school board will be looking to strike a balance between the safety of students and staff while at the same time protecting district finances.
