PARMA, Ohio -- After more than three decades of service on the Parma City School District Board of Education, Karen S. Dendorfer submitted her resignation effective last night (Nov. 5).

“I’m thankful for the opportunity to work with all involved in the Parma City School District,” said Dendorfer in a press release. “I’ll always be an ardent supporter of our shared cause.”

A 1957 Parma Senior High School graduate, the Parma resident first joined the board of education in 1987. During her tenure, which included being re-elected nine consecutive times, Dendorfer held the role of vice president and interim-president.

“She’s been a cornerstone of the board for more than 30 years,” Parma City Schools Board of Education President John Schweitzer said. "She was on the board of education when I was a teacher and later when I became an administrator at Parma High School.

“When I came onto the board of education she was there with open arms offering advice. If there was any issue that would come up, I would go to her. I’m going to miss that.”

Parma City Schools Superintendent Charles Smialek admired Dendorfer’s commitment to the district’s children.

“She truly embodies the notion of a public servant, never looking for credit for herself, always trying to do what was best for the district,” Dendorfer said. “I’m forever grateful for her support and will miss working with her.”

The Parma City School Board of Education, which is accepting applications now through Nov. 13, will appoint a successor within 30 days to serve out Dendorfer’s remaining term through Dec. 31, 2021. Candidates must be district residents and registered voters.

“I think a good candidate would be somebody who is involved in the community, somebody who follows the workings of the school district,” Schweitzer said.

“It would be nice to have somebody who currently has children in the schools or children who graduated from the district. They’d have a great connection to the Parma City Schools.”
