The Vantage Board of Education held the March Regular Board meeting on Thursday, March 4,
2021 in the Cup and Saucer. During the Board meeting, Minutes from the February 4, 2021 regular Board
meeting were approved along with financial statements for the month of January, 2021.
Superintendent Rick Turner began his board update discussing the first round of Covid-19 vaccines
that were administered to any staff that was interested. Mrs. Baumle, Mrs. Carey, Mrs. Askins and a
number of Vantage’s Practical Nursing Students vaccinated over 80 people in under 45 minutes. The
second dose of vaccinations are scheduled to take place March 19, following much of the same format as
the first dose. Mr. Turner also updated the board on a few legislative topics. Governor DeWine has asked
schools in Ohio to submit an Extended Learning Plan to ODE outlining the districts intentions to catch
students up academically from the effects of the pandemic. Vantage has minimized these effects by
operating in the 5-day a week, face to face model for the entire school year. This is attributed to our staff
and students doing a great job adhering to guidelines to provide a safe environment. Career Centers are
monitoring the state biennium budget process, supporting the Fair School Funding Plan (Cupp-Patterson).
Vantage made a significant contribution to the number of credentials issued in Ohio last year, issuing just
under 2% of the total number. This is a large number for the size of our district, and is because of our
students, staff, and programs. Mr. Turner also updated the board on state testing, which will have some
flexibility in timelines and no grades being included on the school report cards. There are still many
unknowns from Columbus as we plan for next school year including school funding and daily operational
details.
High School Director Mike Knott began by praising Mary Ann Falk and the teaching staff for their
work organizing, planning and executing Vantage’s Virtual Open House. He also thanked the student
ambassadors who volunteered their time to show off what they are doing/building in their labs to
interested sophomores. Mr. Knott briefly discussed plans for CAP signing day in the spring and
sophomore visitation days the week of March 22nd. The priority deadline for applications is March 31.
Adult Education Director Kit Tyler updated the Board on the PNP students and their assistance to
the Van Wert Health Department with the administering of Covid-19 vaccinations. The PNP program is
currently accepting applications for next year’s program. There are a number of companies in the area in
which the adult education department is delivering customized training. Terri Schmenk, instructor, has
completed the first phase of training for Fanuc instructor-in-training, and will be completing the second
phase during this month. This will be a great asset as it will allow the adult education department to add
robotics training to the repertoire. There is a CPR class being offered to the public on March 6 and first aid
training was provided to Wee Care Learning Center as well.
