Generation VII of Pokémon was quite memorable. Modeled off of Hawaii, Alola provided a fresh take on the classical Pokémon region while still keeping all the things that fans expected. It put a twist on the traditional Gym system, introduced regional variants, and made use of the effective yet forgettable Z-Moves. All in all, Alola was a step forward for the main series games.
88 new Pokémon species debuted in Generation VII, including all the Ultra Beasts. Alola featured inspired designs and type combinations that elevated their Pokédex to new and exciting heights. Competitively speaking, Gen VII was a glorious time for Pokémon, and it's all thanks to these powerful dual-type creatures.
10 Alolan Golem
One of the strangest yet effective of the Alolan forms, Alolan Golem is a dual-type Rock/Electric Pokémon. Unlike other regional variants, Alolan Golem can only evolve from an Alolan Graveler, which in turn can only come from an Alolan Geodude. With a base stat total of 495, Alolan Golem is a Physical beast when it comes to Attack and Defense but is severely lacking in nearly all other stats.
It's also four-times weak to Ground and has three other weaknesses, as well as five resistances. Overall, it is an improvement over its Kantonian form, which has two quad weaknesses and the same amount of resistances.
9 Toxapex
Based on the incredibly venomous crown-of-thorns starfish, Toxapex is a small creature with large tentacles coming out of its head. It evolves from Mareanie at level 38 and has a base stat total of 495. Toxapex is a defensive titan, with incredibly high Physical and Special Defenses, but below-average everything else.
Its convenient Poison/Water combination means it has only three weaknesses and a whopping eight resistances, including to the overpowered Steel and Fairy-types. It may be terribly slow and horribly frail, but with such brilliant defenses, Toxapex can be a valuable tank in any player's team.
8 Vikavolt
Along with Golisopod, Vikavolt did a lot to significantly increase the Bug-Types usefulness in Alola. This powerful creature seems to be the combination of a stag beetle and a railgun, making it even cooler. Thanks to its dual Bug/Electric-typing, Vikavolt has only two weaknesses which compensate with one immunity and four resistances.
Its 500 base stat total is heavily due to its massive 145 Special Attack. It has above-average Physical Defense and average everything else. Its Speed, however, is truly lacking and can be problematic if not properly addressed. Still, Vikavolt is much more than its Speed and can be a true life-savior in any Alolan playthrough.
7 Bewear
A Pokémon that's as cute as it is deathly, Bewear is considered the most dangerous Pokémon in Alola. It shows affection by giving hugs, but they are so strong they can shatter any human's bones. Possessive and controlling, Bewear will knock its prey out before taking it back to its nest.
A dual-type Fighting/Normal Pokémon, Bewear boasts four weaknesses, is immune to Ghost, and has three further resistances. With a base stat total of 500, Bewear has amazing HP and Physical Attack but is severely lacking on both Special departments, as well as Speed.
6 Alolan Ninetales
Ninetales already was a majestic, beautiful Pokémon, but its Alolan form took it to the next level. Inspired by the tulikettu, a mythical fox creature in Finish lore said to be responsible for the creation of the northern lights, Alolan Ninetales is by far one of the most memorable regional variants.
Its dual Ice/Fairy typing makes it four-times weak to Steel and gives it three other normal vulnerabilities. Fairy makes it immune to Dragon, though, and Ninetales resists three more types. With a base stat total of 505, Alolan Ninetales is incredibly fast and has high Special Defense, but the rest of its stats are rather average.
5 Dhelmise
Dhelmise may just be the coolest forgettable Pokémon of them all. Because it is a single-stage creature that isn't available until the later part of Sun & Moon/Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon's plots, Dhelmise can easily get lost among the sea of Pokémon in the games.
Very obviously based on the idea of a shipwreck, Dhelmise is basically an anchor and a ship's wheel tied together by a piece of seaweed. Its Ghost/Grass combo gives it five weaknesses, two immunities, and four resistances, making it a generally balanced Pokémon. With a surprisingly high 517 base stat total, Dhelmise has excellent Physical Stats, above-average Special offense and defense, average HP, and pitiful Speed.
4 Alolan Exeggutor
Fans remain divided about Alolan Exeggutor. Like its Kantonian form, it has a great 530 base stat total, with both sharing an exceptional 125 Special Attack. Alolan Exeggutor is slower, though, while having a stronger Physical Attack. Its Grass/Dragon typing makes it weak to six different types, including quad vulnerable to Ice. It has no immunities and only four resistances, which isn't the best look.
What makes this regional variant so controversial is its secondary Dragon typing. After all, how can a palm tree be a dragon? Well, there's actually a reason. The Dracaena genus of trees exists and in Hawaiian mythology, there are actually dragons that can shapeshift into trees.
3 Golisopod
Pokémon abilities sometimes fly under the radar, as many people choose to focus on the mon's types or stats. As Golisopod proves, though, an ability can be just as useful as a secondary Steel typing. Thanks to Emergency Exit, its signature ability, Golisopod can be switched out once its health drops below half of its full HP.
Golisopod is also blessed with the very convenient Bug/Water-type, which gives it five resistances and only three immunities. A Physical monster, it has very high Attack and Defense, as well as high Special Defense. Its Speed is awful, though, but not bad enough to ruin this otherwise amazing Pokémon.
2 The Starters
Like Generation IV before it, all three of Gen VII's starters share the same base stat total. At 530, Decidueye, Incineroar, and Primarina all ranked highly on the region's Pokédex. Their stat distribution, however, couldn't be more different. Decidueye has high Attack, Special Attack, and Special Defense; Incineroar has very high Attack and above-average everything else; Primarina's strengths rely on its very high Special Attack and Special Defense.
They also feature some truly inspired type combinations, with Decidueye and Primarina being the first Ghost and Fairy Starters respectively. Incineroar's dual Fire/Dark-type is also a refreshing twist on the already used Fire/Fighting-type.
1 Kommo-o
As Alola's Pseudo-Legendary, Kommo-o was always bound to be the strongest non-Legendary, non-Mythical Pokémon that's also not an Ultra Beast. Like its other Pseudo siblings, Komm-o has a base stat total of 600, with special emphasis on Physical and Special offense and defense. Above-average Speed and HP make this creature a true force to be reckoned with on the battlefield.
Kommo-o's dual Dragon/Fighting-type makes it four-times weak to Fairy and vulnerable to four other types. It also grants it seven resistances, though, so at the end of the day, it's all good and Kommo-o retains its place as Alola's toughest Pokémon.
