MONTEREY — A driver lost control of an RV-type vehicle Friday morning and slammed into the Monterey Bay Aquarium.
The driver fled the scene of the 9:32 a.m. crash, so as of Friday afternoon it was not known whether he sustained injuries. No one inside the aquarium or on the adjacent sidewalk was injured, Monterey Police reported.
The front of the 1987 Chevrolet vehicle sustained significant damage, as did an aquarium entryway, police said. The area impacted is not believed to carry any structural loads. An inner wall of the aquarium’s auditorium was right inside the impact area but did not appear to have suffered any damage.
According to police, the driver apparently either had a mechanical issue or was unable to negotiate the turn. It is unknown why the suspect fled or whether there were drugs or alcohol involved.
The suspect is described as a white or Hispanic man in his 50s wearing blue jeans and a “puffy” jacket.
A spokesperson for the aquarium said the incident would not delay its anticipated reopening.
