BATAVIA — Batavia City School District residents are reminded of the chance to meet and greet the four Board of Education candidates at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Robert Morris, 80 Union St.
Three board seats are up for election. Incumbents John Reigle and Shawna Murphy are running for re-election to their board seats. Board member Tanni Bromley, whose term ends June 03, is not running for re-election. The two challengers running for seats are Brenda Good and Jennifer Lendvay.
There will be limited in-person attendance for Tuesday’s event and COVID-19 protocols are in place. The meet-and-greet will also be live streamed on Facebook @BataviaCitySchools and on the Batavia City Schools Board of Education YouTube channel.
The school district website includes the following candidate information:
Number of years as a district resident: 41
Spouse/children in the district: two school-aged children
Education: Batavia Class of 1997, attended South Dakota School of Mines and Technology
Professional Employment: general manager
Reason for seeking election: “I want to continue my commitment as a member of the Board of Education. Having been a member of this community for many years, I have been able to establish great relationships with district families and school staff. Open communication is very important to me and all of us must work together to advocate for what is best for our children. Voices and opinions should be heard so that we can plan and make the right decisions for our district.”
Number of years as a district resident: 51
Spouse/children in the district: Christopher Weicher, Batavia High School science teacher, one school-aged child
Education: master of English, Brockport State College
Professional employment: adjunct professor of English at Genesee Community College
Reason for seeking election: “I feel I bring a multilayer perspective to the table. I am the mother of a seventh-grader, the wife of a teacher, a teacher at GCC, and a graduate of Batavia High School. Though I do not bring my personal agenda to the meetings, the fact that I have a stake in many aspects of the district makes me mindful of all points of view and the consequences of the choices we make as a board. Those choices, though sometimes seen unfavorably, are always arrived at with the utmost care of all involved, especially our students.”
Number of years as a district resident: 15
Spouse/children in the district: two school-aged children
Education: bachelor, elementary and special education; masters, special education, degree in school administration
Professional employment: special education teacher, director of special education, building principal
Reason for seeking election: “I believe I have great insight on the educational system, and I am aware of the needs of schools from the inside out. I will make students our main priority. Decision making will be based on students from all walks of life.”
Number of years as a district resident: 28; Batavia Class of 1997 graduate, Genesee Valley BOCES licensed practical nurse
Spouse/children in the district: two school-aged children
Education: bachelor’s in English language and literature, University of Charleston
Professional employment: licensed practical nurse, teacher aide, account manager
Reason for seeking election: “Being part of the Board of Education would allow me to assist in a greater capacity and support each of our schools. As a member of our community and Batavia Class of 1997 graduate, I feel it is important to have people on the board that do not have ties to faculty or staff, and I have young children at the intermediate level that will allow a new perspective on the board. Finding new ways to do things, reexamining past practices and listening to faculty and staff about their concerns are important. My goal as a member of the Board of Education is to serve as an independent voice for a fresh look at our schools including location of resources and key areas of concern to the administrators, staff, parents and taxpayers.
