Memorial Day tradition returns to Oshkosh

The city’s Memorial Day Procession, which was canceled last year because of COVID, will set off at 9 a.m. from Jackson Street and Algoma Boulevard and proceed to Riverside Cemetery for a ceremony at approximately 10 a.m. The day’s events start at the South Park Veterans Memorial at 7 a.m. with the reading of names of Oshkosh service members who have passed away. To honor those lost at sea, there will be an 8 a.m. ceremony at Riverside Park, east of the Main Street Bridge.

AquaHawk goes lives

The city is starting an online water monitoring system called AquaHawk. “By subscribing to this free service, customers can view water consumption, receive timely leak alerts and control water expenses,” said City Manager Mark Rohloff. “Customers can use the system to avoid unexpected high bills and costly water damage from leaks.”

To register for AquaHawk, visit https://ift.tt/3z0Rgj0.  Because it is web-based, residents can use it to monitor water usage even if they are away from home.

School board to vote on superintendent’s contract

The school board will meet Tuesday afternoon to approve a contract for Bryan Davis, who has been selected to serve as the next superintendent of the Oshkosh Area School District.

The new contract will likely exceed the compensation paid to the outgoing superintendent.  In his current job heading the Shorewood School District, Davis already makes more than the salary and benefits that have been paid to schools chief Vickie Cartwright.

According to the Department of Public Instruction, Davis has a total salary of $183,683 and total fringe benefits of $54,026.

Lakeshore Pavilion design up for review

The Plan Commission will meet Tuesday to pass judgment on the design of the four-season pavilion planned for Lakeshore Park. The structure will be situated roughly where the former golf course’s maintenance building stands. Its core will consist of concrete masonry and glass. The roof will use “wood-look” metal panels, and the deck will be made from composite wood. Staff is recommending approval of the design.

Salvation Army to break ground for expansion

The Salvation Army of Oshkosh will break ground Thursday for the expansion of its Algoma Boulevard facility.

The project will double the size of the group’s space. The first floor will have:

  • An updated cafeteria and serving area.
  • A new auditorium/chapel.
  • An updated nursery/childcare space.
  • Multiple updated classrooms/meeting rooms.
  • Updated administration and social worker offices.
  • Updated men’s and women’s restrooms.
  • A new multipurpose room to accommodate  annual events such as the coat and toy drives.

The lower level will have:

  • A new elevator
  • A renovated food and retail pantry
  • A new receiving and storage area with a loading dock

During construction some programs will be operated out of the former Bella Academy for Cosmetology, 338 Pearl Ave.

Farmers Market begins new season

The Oshkosh Farmers Market will be back on Main Street starting at 8 a.m. Saturday.

The market will operate through the last Saturday of October.
