LAPS News:

The Los Alamos School Board met for a Work Session Thursday, May 27 at Barranca Mesa Elementary School. President Melanie Colgan opened the meeting with a moment of silence in remembrance of Sara Snowball and Peter DeArguero, both employees of Los Alamos Public Schools who passed away this school year.

President Colgan then recognized Dr. Kurt Steinhaus, Superintendent of Los Alamos Public Schools, for his years of service to the district and congratulated him on his retirement. The audience enjoyed a performance by a trio of jazz musicians who performed two numbers in honor of Dr. Steinhaus, who began his 45-year career in education as a music teacher.

Kathryn Vandenkieboom, Learning Systems Director for LAPS also was congratulated on her retirement. She also held teaching positions and was the principal at Aspen Elementary before moving to the district office.

Next, Jennifer Guy, Interim Superintendent, and Jennifer McCumber, Executive Director of the Los Alamos Public Schools Foundation, recognized 12 teachers who recently completed and submitted their dossiers:

  • Catherine Cloran, Barranca Elementary;
  • Erin Cook, Mountain Elementary;
  • Jessica Dixon, Mountain Elementary;
  • Kayla Ferguson, Mountain Elementary;
  • Kathleen Hipwood, Los Alamos High School;
  • Bonnie James, Piñon Elementary;
  • Alison Renner, Los Alamos High School;
  • Sherri Smith, Los Alamos High School;
  • Felicia Thornton, Chamisa Elementary;
  • Elizabeth Turner, Los Alamos High School;

The board next heard an update on Barranca Mesa Elementary School from Principal Gina Terrazas. Terrazas told the board that school staff incorporate the core values of kindness, integrity and support in their daily routines. She also touched on comments from students and staff regarding this school year, including the observation that “building a community of friends and learners is important”. Highlights of her presentation covered student well-being, student learning and teacher excellence.

“Our students are loving the learning and they are participating,” Terrazas said. “They are happy to be back.”

Principal Terrazas shared this reflection, “This year has definitely had its challenges; however, I have learned to appreciate each and every one of my coworkers, administrators, and student. Each individual has played an important role in teaching me that slowing down and appreciating each day and all it brings is what made this year successful. Flexibility and patience now have a completely different meaning in my eyes!”

When asked about any challenges for next year, Terrazas said that staff would be reviewing “the way we do lunch. We see it as a change we need to make.” She also presented math and reading scores from testing in April and, while a significant number of students showed that they need supports or were near target for math, Terrazas explained that resources and supports are available to help students in these areas.

The board then unanimously approved a joint proclamation with the Los Alamos County Council to recognize and honor the life of Dr. Peter Lyons, who had served on the school board for 16 years. Dr. Lyons passed away on April 29.

The board approved staff to develop and finalize a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with High Flyers Gymnastics regarding expenses and responsibilities for renovations of their leased facility in the Pueblo Complex. The gymnastics school plans to expand into the space occupied by the Los Alamos Schools Credit Union and the LAPS Foundation. Staff will present the MOA at the June 8 School Board meeting.

The next Regular School Board Meeting is 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 8 and the next School Board Work Session is 5:30 p.m. Thursday, June 24.
