(June 22, 2021) Conservation Commission incumbent Ian Golding and former Historic District Commission and Planning Board member Linda Williams were appointed to the ConCom Wednesday night in a string of Select Board appointments to town boards and committees.
Golding and Williams were two of seven applicants vying for two seats on the commission, along with Ian Golding, David Golden, Marcia Browne, Neil Foley, Joseph Plandowski and Bill Cohan. Incumbent Joe Topham chose not to seek reappointment.
This is the second consecutive year Williams has applied for the commission. The board initially appointed her in a split vote last year over chair Ashley Erisman. That vote, however, set off a backlash from commission members and conservationists concerned the board was appointing someone with a development background to a commission charged with protecting the island’s wetlands, over someone with an environmental science background. The board reversed its vote one week later.
This time around, Williams received three votes, from Melissa Murphy, Kristie Ferrantella and chair Dawn Holdgate. Matt Fee voted for Joe Plandowski. Jason Bridges voted for Marcia Browne. All five board members voted to re-appoint Golding.
The board also voted in Lee Saperstein, Leslie Forbes, Magee Detmer and Rebecca Woodley Oliver to the Scholarship Committee over Katherine Manchester. They appointed incumbent Airport Commission member Andrea Planzer and Phil Marks to the commission over Ray Kairawicz, and incumbent Jim Cooper to the Board of Health over Ann Smith.
Twelve more committee openings were uncontested. The board voted in Pete Kaizer for the Capital Program Committee; Lee Saperstein and Fran Karttunen to the Cemetery Commission; and Joanna Roche for the Coastal Resilience Advisory Committee.
They also appointed Tony Wagner to the Cultural Council; Posie Constable to the Agricultural Commission; George Harrington, Peter McEachern and Peter Schaeffer to the Finance Committee; Brooke Mohr to the Affordable Housing Trust; Thomas Barada and John Brescher to the Real Estate Assessment Committee; Nelson Eldridge and Edward Gillum to the Roads and Right-of-Way Committee; Nat Lowell to the Steamship Authority Port Council; Sue Mynttinen and Athalyn Sweeney to the Council on Human Services; Vanessa Larrabe, Judith Perkins, Linda Williams and Nancy Swain to the Council on Aging; Tom Montgomery, Angus MacLeod and Mickey Rowland to the Historical Commission; and Carrie Thornewill as an associate member of the Historic District Commission.
The board also voted unanimously to appoint Rocky Fox to fill the open School Committee seat vacated by Zona Butler earlier this month. Fox had the unanimous recommendation of the School Committee.
There are four open seats on the Agricultural Commission, one on the Tree Advisory Committee and one on the Zoning Board of Appeals.
