Pokémon: 10 Ways Fairy Is The Best Type | CBR - CBR - Comic Book Resources

Pokémon are divided into eighteen main types, with one of them being the Fairy-Type, which was introduced as a new type in Generation VI. A rather diverse type, the overall group seems to take influence from creatures and spirits from folklore around the world.

They are known for having beautiful or cute appearances, and often have benevolent personalities to match, but the group is actually much more varied than they initially appear to be. After all, various Pokémon are a mix of two types. In fact, some Pokémon didn't look like they were Fairy-Type Pokémon when they were first introduced.

10 Their Appearances Can Be Deceiving

Not only is it easy to dismiss something associated with "fairies," many of the Fairy-Type Pokémon are given cute designs. However, this often hides their more dangerous nature, such as Azumarill, who hides its Huge Power behind a rabbit-themed appearance. This is rather fitting given that fairies in ancient folklore often could be murderous and downright diabolic, despite the rather cute reputation fairies are given in modern popular culture.

9 Fairies Aren't Always Nice, Either

Fairy-Type Pokémon are very versatile when it comes to hybrids, with there being Pokémon who combine the type with Ice, Grass, Steel, Psychic, and more. In keeping with this, there are a few Fairy-Type Pokémon that also combine with Dark-Type, such as Impidimp, Morgrem, and Grimmsnarl.

Despite the association with cuteness and light, the Fairy-Type can also be malicious. As mentioned, among their members are Dark-Type hybrids, which are known to feed on negative energy and emotions. Shiinotic, a Grass-Type hybrid, is also known for having similar habits, meaning this isn't just an attribute of the Dark-Type, either. They are also capable of the life-stealing Draining Kiss.

8 They Were Among Us From The Beginning

Once the Fairy-Type was introduced, various Pokémon of different backgrounds were retroactively made part of the group. For example, Togepi and Clefairy families went from the Normal-Type to a pure Fairy-Type. Added to that, some became Fairy-Type hybrids and even certain moves have since become associated with the type.

This was somewhat unique compared to the other types that have since been introduced. Dark did not retroactively gain any new Pokémon and Steel only got two. Because of this, the Fairy-Type comes off as including a variety of Pokémon and, in a meta-sense, seems like a very welcoming and validating group.

7 They Have A High Special Defense

The Fairy-Type Pokémon have what is considered the highest average Special Defense of all types. Special Defence measures the resistance to damage a Pokémon can endure when dealing with a Special Attack. They are also immune to damage from the Dragon-Type. In fact, it's believed that they were even introduced to nerf the Dragon-Type.

6 They Can Learn To Survive

Naturally, every type has to have some weakness, but that doesn't mean that the Fairy-Type doesn't have a few tricks up its sleeve: it can learn moves that give it an advantage over Pokémon normally resistant to them. For example, Fairy attacks are weak against the Poison-Type, despite being a relatively weak type. However, Poison is also weak to Psychic moves, which Fairy Pokémon can eventually learn.

5 They Have Quite A Few Strengths In Their Corner

When it comes to offense, they are generally strong against Dark-Type, Dragon-Type, and Fighting-Type Pokémon. When it comes to defense, they are also strong against the Bug-Type, in addition to Dark-Type and Fighting-Type, and, as mentioned, they are immune to the Dragon-Type.

The three types they are weak against, however, are Fire, Poison, and Steel, the latter likely being a reference to the common myth of fairies being weakened by cold iron.

4 They Have A Powerful Ally In The Ground-Type

While there are types that are resistant to the Fairy-Type, there is an easy way to plan around them. Types that are resistant to the Fairy-Type are also weak to Ground-Type, meaning that the Fairy and Ground types can combine to form a powerful combination, especially since, when it comes to supporting allies, the Fairy-Type can give as good as it gets.

3 They Can Put The Environment Around Them To Good Use

A few of their moves, like Misty Terrain and Flower Shield, involve them manipulating the environment around them to their advantage. They can also control the wind and use it to attack with the Fairy Wind move. With Fairy Lock, they can lock the battlefield. They can even summon power from light itself, as seen in Moonblast, Moonlight, and Light of Ruin. With power over the earth and sky, they have unlimited potential to transform the battlefield around them into a weapon.

2 They Are Skilled Healers

Admittedly, the Fairy-Type is rather slow and doesn't have too many physical moves. Sometimes, however, having a powerful attack isn't enough to win. Healing powers can also give a team an unexpected advantage.

Not only is it able to heal itself, but depending on the move, Fairy-Type Pokémon are also capable of healing other Pokémon, making it a powerful teammate and ally. And that's just the start. They can buff their stats, and their allies' stats, and even do the opposite for their opponents. They can block all status moves and effects from both their team and the entire field.

1 They Cannot Be Easily Replicated

Depending on the circumstances, there are a few types that the Hidden Power move cannot become: the Normal-Type, the Fairy-Type, and, at times, the ???-Type.

Pokemon that naturally have Protean or Libero cannot become Fairy-Types by using it. There are some exceptions, like Kecleon, which can become a Fairy-Type with Color Change or Camouflage. In a way, this emphasizes the special nature of the Fairy-Type, as it is not easy to replicate. In fact, it can be argued that scarcity is the main thing holding back the type.
