Poso Fire Update – June 11, 2021
EL RITO, NM – June 11, 2021 – In order to take advantage of the lightning caused Poso Fire, the Northern New Mexico Type 3 Incident Management Team aims to implement management tactics to meet multiple resource objectives. Some of which are, returning natural fire into the eco-system to promote forest health, reduce hazardous fuels to reduce the risk of severe wildfires, and limit firefighter exposure. Aerial firing operations were conducted yesterday evening to test the effects of future backfiring. This backfiring helps remove excess fuels which will allow the Poso Fire to burn in a moderate manner as it makes its way to the prepared containment perimeter.

Location: Carson NF, El Rito Ranger District, 10 miles north of El Rito, adjacent to FR123
Cause: Lightning Size: 195 acres Percent Contained: 0%
Resources: 3 hand crews, 1 wildland fire module, 3 Type 6 engines, 1 Type 3 helicopter, 1 dozer, 1 masticator, 1 grader, 2 water tenders, 1 ambulance, 1 Rapid Extraction Module (REM) Team, 1 unmanned area system (drone)
Fuels: Ponderosa pine and mixed conifer
Operations: Firefighters continue to prepare containment lines around the Poso Fire management area as well as planning for aerial firing operations. Fire managers used the evening and nighttime weather to initiate fire within the footprint to observe the how the fire will respond to the fuels and topography with the observed current conditions. Firefighters are using helicopter operations for aerial firing but this wildfire also provides a unique opportunity to use new technologies such as the “unmanned aerial system” which is a drone used to observe and record fire progression as well as an alternative to helicopters to put fire on the ground from the air.
Weather: Mostly sunny with areas of smoke in the morning, 0% chance of rain, maximum temperatures of 80 to 84 degrees, minimum humidity 5 to 9%, winds out of the west-southwest at 4 to 7 mph.
Values at risk: Vallecitos watershed, cultural and historical sites
Smoke: As fire increases in size and firing operations commence, smoke may be visible from the communities of Abiquiu, Canjilon, Cañon Plaza, Vallecitos, La Madera, El Rito, Ojo Caliente, Petaca, Las Tablas and Tres Piedras which may continue to show for several days. A Temporary 24 hour Flight Restriction (TFR) is in place over the fire. Unauthorized use of unmanned aircraft (also known as “drones”) in a fire area endangers the lives of pilots and firefighters and is strictly forbidden.
