Long before the Nationals selected him with the 11th overall pick of the 2021 MLB Draft, young infielder Brady House attended a game in D.C. with his family. A half-decade later, the thing he remembers most about Nationals Park was the atmosphere that the fans created.
“I think I was 12 or 13, it was whenever my travel ball team was traveling up north,” House said on a Zoom call Sunday. “We went to the Nationals game, it was my mom, my brother, me and my grandma and I just remember the atmosphere being electric and that’s what I’m looking forward to going into this is just the atmosphere and the fans and playing with hopefully a bunch of those top elite prospects.”
House, 18, heard his name called by MLB commissioner Rob Manfred just over an hour into the draft. The shortstop from Winder-Barrow High School in Winder, Ga. wasn’t picked as early as experts figured a few months ago, but he said the Nationals are “where I’m meant to be” after getting to know several of their scouts over the last several years.
He said that he’s been called a “Ryan Zimmerman-type” in the past, a comparison that carries much more weight now that House has been drafted by the Nationals. Barring any unforeseen snags in negotiations, House plans to forego his commitment to Tennessee and sign with Washington.
When the topic of Washington shortstop Trea Turner came up, House couldn’t even finish his sentence.
“It’s crazy,” he said. “I know it hasn’t been a long time but I’ve been watching Trea Turner since he started and just now that I’m in this organization and Trea — it’s just crazy. It’s crazy.”
Turner, of course, is still just 28 and made his big-league debut in 2015 when House was 12.
House is the first position player drafted by the Nationals since they selected Carter Kieboom with the 28th pick in 2018. Though he’s only been to D.C. once, the Nationals hope that his travel ball trip to the District was his first of many.
