The state Secretaries’ Science Advisory Board is set to meet virtually at 2 p.m. Monday to discuss public health risk assessment tools.

Public health tools include any of the actions that the state departments of Environmental Quality and Health and Human Services can take to protect the public such as a provisional drinking water health goal or fish consumption advisory from DHHS or an action level, rule or standard from DEQ.

“We will discuss how each of the recent recommendations from the (advisory board) was used by each Department to protect public health,” DEQ representative Zaynab Nasif told Coastal Review.

Also on the agenda for Monday is a continued conversation on per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, or PFAS, research in the state and discuss prioritization of chemicals for the board’s consideration.

To listen via online WebEx: Listen to the meeting online through WebEx or call 1-415-655-0003, Access Code: 161 693 9301. Organizers ask that telephones be muted when entering.

Register online by 5 p.m. Friday to speak during the Monday meeting.

The advisory board, which includes 16 experts in toxicology, public health, ecology, engineering and related fields, helps the state departments of Environmental Quality and Health and Human Services by recommending reviews and evaluations of contaminants, acting as consultants on DEQ’s determinations to regulate contaminants, and helping the agencies identify contaminants of concern and decide what contaminants should be studied further.
