NACS pauses public comments at board meetings due to 'safety concerns' - Fort Wayne's NBC

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Fort Wayne’s NBC) — Northwest Allen County Schools' board is temporarily stopping public comments at meetings due to safety concerns reported by the Allen County Sheriff's Department.

NACS' Board of School Trustees says public comments will be paused at its meetings pending the assessment, design, and implementation of an enhanced safety plan for its meetings due to safety concerns reported to the board by police.

"The NACS School Board is committed to resuming public comment when it is confident that public comment can occur in a safe manner," a release sent by the school system said.

A school official said one of the reasons for the decision was several meetings becoming heated over the district's recent COVID-19 policies.

On Aug. 31, the board voted to reinstate a mask mandate for those in school buildings.

Following the decision, several parents who have children in the school system filed a lawsuit demanding the district ends its COVID-19 restrictions.

The lawsuit, filed in Allen Superior Court, claims NACS’ temporary mask mandate and quarantine policies are “unconstitutional,” “unscientific,” and “serve no legitimate government purpose.”

For further information, NACS officials say to visit their website.
