FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Fort Wayne's NBC) -Several Allen County Sheriff deputies monitored the school board meeting at North West Allen County Schools Monday night now that public comment isn’t allowed.
Superintendent Chris Himsel says the Allen County Sheriff’s Department advised the board to meet in a classroom instead of the auditorium out of safety concerns.
Outside the meeting Monday, there was a large crowd of parents chanting against the mask mandate decision and the meeting changes.
"They had serious concerns for the safety structure,” Himsel said. “Our resource officer made those arrangements, and it was made based on what the officers hear and the chatter that they know and comes their way.”
Monday’s meeting had six officers monitoring the crowds and escorting people inside the meeting.
About 15 people were given a seat in the meeting on a first-come first-serve basis, while the others were able to watch a live stream on display down the hall.
Those outside the meeting were shouting and claiming the changes are violating their rights.
Himsel says public comment is not required by law.
Open Door Law in Indiana states that public school boards must make board meetings open the public in some fashion but public comment can be restricted by board members.
“Public comment is not required in school board meetings; it never has been,” he said. “They just have to take place in public. We just have to have public observers.”
Himsel says he’s not sure how long these changes will last but they will be consulting law enforcement before each board meeting.
"We still want to be able to get back to public comment, but we are going to pause that until we have a plan the Allen County police department is comfortable with.”
Himsel also pointed out that their mask mandate is working based on their numbers. He said the week before the mandate they had 600 students in quarantine, compared to last week there was only 27.
