BAY CITY AREA SOCCER ROUNDUP

A look at how teams in the Bay City area fared on the first day of district action. May be updated as information becomes available.

BANGOR TOWNSHIP, MI – Getting the first goal was no picnic.

And the second was no walk in the park.

But this day had nothing to do with rest and relaxation for the Bay City Western boys soccer team. The Warriors had a job to do – and they didn’t ease up until the work was done.

After a tooth-and-nail start, Western found a spark and erupted for an 8-0 victory over neighboring rival John Glenn in the opening round of the Division 2 district tournament.

“Getting one goal is one thing,” Western coach Kyle Jean said. “But these guys instantly said ‘Let’s go get another one.’ There’s a big difference between 2-0 and 1-1 – they’ve heard me say that a bunch of time – so they know we need to take care of business after we get one goal.

“We wanted to make sure we got ahead of the game and not take our foot off the gas.”

UPDATED Bay City area soccer pairings and results

Western (10-8-3) advances to the district semifinal to host Gaylord at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday. The quarterfinal triumph marked Western’s first postseason victory since it won the program’s only district title in 2014.

On this day, the Warriors came ready to rock.

“This group is pretty good about setting goals and going after them, and winning the district is something we’ve talked about,” Jean said. “So they were pretty focused today. This was probably the best warmup we’ve had all year. Sometimes they’re talking about things that aren’t necessarily about the game, but there was none of that.

“There was a high-energy, ‘Let’s go’ type of feeling.”

Expecting an intense challenge from John Glenn, the Warriors got it in the early going. Neither team could break through in the first 17 minutes.

Owen Clark fed Brenden Dore for the goal that finally cracked the ice. But the Warriors didn’t take time to take a deep breath. They got back to work.

Aiden Short scored on a dish from Dore for the important 2-0 margin – and then the floodgates opened. Western led 5-0 by halftime and reached the mercy-ruled eight-goal margin with 31 minutes on the clock in the second half.

“If you get a couple goals, the pressure goes on the other team and goes off your team, and you end up playing better,” Jean said.

“Glenn had a good chance when it was 0-0. If they go up 1-0, it becomes a different game.”

Short went on to deliver a hat trick to lead the Western attack. Dore added two goals while Nolan Besaw, Calvin Watson and Shawn Duncan each added one.

Dore and Watson each tallied two assists and Clark, Duncan, Riley Friedle and Caleb Colberg each notched one. Cody Card registered the shutout in goal, highlighted by some vital saves early in the contest.

DIVISION 3

FLINT POWERS 4, ESSEXVILLE GARBER 0

Essexville Garber entered postseason play with a full head of steam.

But Flint Powers has been a stopping point for many soccer teams.

Winner of three state championships in program history, Powers put the brakes on Garber with a 4-0 victory in opening-round action of the Division 3 district at Atwood Stadium. It marked the second year in a row Powers eliminated the Dukes.

“I would say this Flint Powers team is more poised and more controlled than even last year’s squad,” Garber coach Bill Williamson said. “Their possession game mirrors the style of play we seek to develop in our own players. And they execute it very well.”

Garber (10-9-3) hung tough, keeping the game scoreless until the 18-minute mark of the opening half and hovering within 2-0 at halftime. Powers added a third goal seven minutes into the second half and punched in the final score with 10 seconds left in the game.

Senior keeper Cam Rowley registered eight saves for the Dukes.

This marked the fourth straight year Garber reached the 10-win mark and seventh time in nine seasons.
